Memorable Night For All The Wrong Reasons

by smokejeremy42000 on 10/9/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

To really get a flavor for the show, check out the 12 minute video on you tube. I felt bad for Rufus, but the entire eveneing was focused on whether Sly would actually appear and , if he did, how would he perform. The buzz in the crowd was that Sly would not show. The absence of his name on the marquee and the one hour delay in the start of the show just added fuel to the fire. Rufus did a solid 50 minutes of soul/funk until Sly made his entrance. For the next 20 minutes or so, it was the theater of the absurd. Sly's keyboard wasn't working, his voice was raspy and his words were mostly unintelligible. One of the all time greats , a real originator , now in a state where isn't in performing shape, and that is an understatement. The great mystery is whose idea was it in the first place.

    Sad

by floydd on 10/9/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Sly Stone was the draw card. I have to wonder at what point is this just fraud. I mean how could they not know the fragile state Sly is sadly in and the probability that he would thankfully walk off? After a long opening set Sly appeared stooped over in a white track suit, mumbling incoherently and then immediately demanded that audience members come up on stage and sing which is something I am not paying for. You quickly realize something is seriously wrong with Sly and singing will be out of the question. He fumbled unsuccessfully with his keyboard which did or did not work... who knows? He then lectured the band that he was running this thing. So after several keyboards and about a 30 minute delay he walked off. Let me be clear I am not upset with Sly Stone. I have great empathy for him. I am only pointing out what actually happened. I think Rufus or any band, promoter or venue who uses Sly's name to pack a house is doing just that and I think it's a con. We have all seen musicians that are too messed up to play but this was beyond that. It was truly sad.

    Rufus and Sly Stone

by Stamont on 10/8/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

This show was unforgettable because the main player, Sly Stone came on stage and was in such poor condition that he was unable to deliver. Instead of telling the truth about the situation he blamed it on the equipment which was fully functional. I t is a shame to use a name in order to sell a show knowing that the performer cannot deliver. I felt cheated. We purchased seven tickets for the celebration of a birthday, and no one wanted to leave the show feeling sad. It was truly upsetting to see such a great musician in such a deteriorated state. Get him help please! Also why is there a line up for entry to B.B.Kings' ? Why not allow the audience to enter as they arrive instead of having a line up?

    Featuring Sly?

by MargaritaMel on 10/8/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

What a mistake that was! Rufus was tight - but the attempt to have Sly perform was pitiful. Rufus, go alone and Sly, it's time to hang it up. Wish my last memory wasn't of Sly's poor attempt to perform on stage.

    Rufus with Sly - Sad

by nyywc on 10/8/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

First of all I need to say Rufus is a fine band, in great form and working hard. With all that they could not put all the pieces of Sly back together, and they tried. Sly did not manage to play a single song all the way through. This is a man who built up so much good will in his early years and who has spent it all. Really the same thing happened the last time he was at BB King's 5 years ago with The Family Stone. What comes across is either Sly can't perform or he chooses to make a mockery of the people who paid lot's of hard earned money to see him. Either way is just plain wrong. Sad also to say that the staff at BB King seemed as if they could care less. the first show was delayed an hour and fifteen minutes with no announcements. The music playing before the show for three hours was bad, not sure how any educated music person could have chosen the tracks. The food was good. When I raised the issue with management about the show I was waved off. BB, love you, things ain't right at your place!
