it was fun to hear Janis live!

by boababy on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

It was not as intense as I expected. It would have been better to also hear some of the music Janis listened to. It could have helped to develop her character a bit instead of the ole sex drugs and rock n roll. Her relationship with her mom helped a bit but it lacked depth.

Sophie was amazing, show was not.

by Tileshark on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Sophie "nailed" Janis in all ways, except the band was so extremely loud they drowned out many of her songs. The overall sound for the entire show was muffled and made understanding even the dialogue a challenge.

Standing ovation to Room 105 - The Highs And Lows

by Quinster on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

The three of us thought the show was great. My husband and I had seen both Love Janis and Rm 105 and loved them both. Each show presented a different perspective on Janis's life. Sophie B Hawkins was amazing. She was quite funny playing the role of Janis. Her voice was incredible and sounded just like Janis. My husband and my girlfriend are Janis Joplin music buffs. They would love a CD released of Sophie singing the Janis Songs. We all felt Me and Bobby McGee was the only song that was not as strong and my girlfriend thought the rendition of Little Girl Blue was better than Janis Joplin. The show had a few technical difficulties but Sophie and her personnel assistant were able to go with the flow and were quite witty covering for the glitches. Kuddos to the seven performers. Standing ovation to Room 105 - The Highs And Lows Of Janis Joplin.

    Highs lows Janis Joplin

by Caligirl4ever on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I love Janis Joplin...but I was very disappointed . We could not understand her half the time...her mike kept going out. We were sitting right underneath the speakers and It was too too loud. It was my first visit to Bergan performing arts center and I can't imagine going back there for a performance. It was a big disappointment . Will not be returning. I would of been more upset had we paid more money.

The Highs and Lows plauged with Technical Problems

by Class1cR0ckr on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

The venue is fairly small and easy to get to however the performance was plauged with problems related to Ms. Hawkings portable microphone. There were at least 2 or 3 attempts by different people to remedy the situation but to no avail. To her credit Ms. Hawking gamely kept portrating the character of Janis Joplin however I couldn't hear the dialogue as she attempted to channel Ms. Joplin. Aiding in this were a few dancers who also portrated lovers and fellow drug and alcohol users. An "interview" with "Dick Cabot" was reinacted along with talks with her mother. These were very much one sided conversations due to the microphone issues. Ms. Hawking was accompanied by a band who played behind a black curtain and the only time they seemed to come together was when they played the Chris Kristoperson ballard "Me and Bobby McGee,: Fotunately I went with friends and we enjoyed ourselves in spite of the technical difficuloties. I would love to seew Ms. Hawking with a working P.A. and would suggest that she get the band from behind the curtin.

Room 105 - ok if you like the music

by Jersey07024 on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I saw this play in NY probably 15 years ago as a one woman show. I enjoyed it much better then this one as it had a flow of her life conveyed to the audience that updated version does not. This version has added dance numbers with talented people and the Bob Fosse type routines are pretty good but seem out of place. I guess this is part of updating for today's audience. I enjoyed the music from the band and the lead actress. While she is not Janis Joplin in voice, in her energy and expression she most certainly is. She still puts on a great show. I did have an enjoyable evening seeing this which is why if you are a fan of Joplin, you should enjoy it if not finding yourself reading a bio on her afterwards to fill in the missing pieces.

Thanks for bringing Janis alive for me!!!

by yamilisa on 2/25/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

This was an amazing look into an interesting woman that has made an impact on music. I learned things I didn't know about Janice Joplin. Sophie did a wonderful interpretation of her that allowed me a 36 yr old to feel as if I were seeing a legend for real. I felt as amazed at this performance as I did at a U2 or Aerosmith concert. This would probably be an outstanding Broadway show.
