About

RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

Great venue. Rodriguez is getting old!

by Hedgehog on 2/18/20Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

He’s one of the heroes from my teenage years and his story has touched so many hearts. I grew up in South Africa so his songs are part of me and part of why I write and sing myself. But he is getting too old to be touring. The venue was fab. My first time.

    A Legend Long Past Prime

by NA on 2/18/20Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

I appreciate and acknowledge that Rodriguez is not in great health. But a 45 minute performance including QA - so perhaps 30 minutes of music - is inappropriate. If health prohibits more do not perform or at least be clear to buyers about short set. Refrain from advertising this as " an evening" when due to brevity it is not. Awesome writer and singer sadly long past prime. A wonderful artist struggling to make it through even this anemic set. Let the legend rest.

    Rodriguez delivered !

by gabrielino on 9/8/18Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los Angeles

We enjoyed the documentary, the production of the first two albums and he was playing in our back yard ... so let's go. As he was helped to center stage I began thinking, 'this may be the shortest set ever' .... wrong. His soul & wit is as beautiful & young as any. A few topical covers, one being Buffalo Springfield's 'For What It's Worth', were appreciated by all. And he closed with a three song encore .... Rodriguez delivered !!

    Rodriguez

by LBlan on 8/28/18Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los Angeles

The venue was great. The seats were comfortable, and the staff helpful. I have no problem with the venue, just the artist. I had a horrible time; it was an absolute waste of money. Rodriguez came onto stage drunk, and could not even fully play his own songs. He was repeating verses over and over, and couldn’t seem to find the microphone as he sang them. He played covers of the doors and a couple other bands from the period, which I feel is BS. I came to hear his music, not the Doors. Otherwise, I’d go see a Doors cover band. He did not successfully play a SINGLE song of his own. For around $100 a ticket, he is blatantly ripping people off if he is not going to deliver.

    Rodriguez was great.

by Anonymous on 8/28/18Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los Angeles

Rodriguez was great. The 2 acts proceeding him I can sum up in one word, ‘Agonizing’. Whoever does the line up of who proceeds him really needs to get a grip on reality.

    Heartbreaking

by BTGA on 8/28/18Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los Angeles

I love Sixto Rodriquez’s Music and words....have seen him perform six times now; however this is the last time. His voice is so weak it seems like he’s speaking the words and not singing. I will play his CD’s and remember him as he was but it was heartbreaking to hear him this time. And before he came out, the woman singer who sang before him was terrible! Absolutely nothing good about her, brought me back to thinking I was at a coffee club.

Charming man that left us in tears

by DenzilBaynes on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

It goes without saying that Rodriguez is nothing less than a legend. I have grown up listening to his music for decades. Albeit his age he did his best and I feel blessed to have seen him Live and in concert. A night I will never forget!

    Over the hill

by Rodrigueviewer on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Rodriguez is a legend no doubt. However he is no longer physically able to perform. He has no voice energy and cannot walk without assistance. I think his performing verges on elder abuse.

    What is wrong with Rodriguez?

by root66 on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Rodriguez is 76 but looks 86. He has to be helped onto the stage and he no longer sings. He chants the words to the songs while strumming (not very tunefully) on his guitar. He slurred his words when speaking and made little sense. Why did people continue to sit and listen? I didn't. Stroke? Drunk? Totally past it? If so, why is he still touring when he must know he stinks? By the way - the location is great - Humphrey's concerts By The Bay, our favorite place.
