Rocko's 2008 release Self Made launched him into the rap scene, with the album premiering at No. 24 on the Billboard Top 100 and featuring its flagship single, "Umma Do Me," which held the No. 66 spot on the Billboard Rap singles chart. Rocko is well known for his interactive performances that encourage audience participation and conversation, making one of his concerts a very interactive show for ticket buyers. During his concerts, Rocko’s interaction with the crowd makes the event feel more collaborative. He often gives audience members the chance to sing along to the lyrics of his most popular hits. His high-profile style also makes even smaller concerts feel bigger, with massive lighting and fast-paced hooks. In 2013, Rocko announced that his mixtape Seeing is Believing would be released as his second studio album, One of One.

Rocko got started in the music business in 1999 as a ghostwriter for rap labels, which would eventually enable him to start his own label in 2002, called Rocky Road Records. Through his label, Rocko worked with artists like Young Dro and Dem Franchize Boyz. The success of his label would lead to Rocko being signed to Def Jam Records in 2006, which launched his solo career. "Self Made," released in 2008, featured collaborative pieces with artists like Lloyd, Dr. Dre and Monica. The single, "Umma Do Me," was his first work to be featured on Billboard. Rocko’s tour often features collaborators and surprise appearances, making him a very spontaneous performer with high energy and a dedication to his performance.
