About

Jazz pianist Robert Glasper's booming career has taken two different tracks. There's the Robert Glasper Trio, which is his more traditional acoustic ensemble dating to the early '00s featuring drummer Chris Dave and bassist Vicente Harper, and The Robert Glasper Experiment, which defies easy categorization. "Black music is the house that has many rooms," Glasper said in the label bio for the Robert Glasper Experiment's 2013 album, Black Radio 2. "Black people have invented so many dope genres that everyone loves: Jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, rock, hip-hop, and the list goes on. I'm just visiting all those rooms." The first Robert Glasper Experiment album, 2012's Black Radio, fused elements of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, and teamed Glasper's group with guests including Ledisi, Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco, and Bilal. The combination proved a hit with both jazz and R&B fans, and won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Glasper ventured further into the hip-hop and soul realm on Black Radio 2, which features guests including Common, Norah Jones, Snoop Dogg, and Jill Scott. Glasper and his band toured large clubs and theaters in 2013, getting kudos for their solid musicianship and  diverse repertoire from both critics and from fans who bought tickets.

    It was hardly worth going.

by Dave on 12/8/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

Robert spent entirely too much time talking, rambling and preaching between songs. The set was loosely organized and unprofessional, and felt more like a rehearsal. I'm not sure they even had a set list. After each number they seemed at a loss as to what to play next. The band was awesome, but they didnt get to play enough and seemed bored sitting around waiting for Robert to finish his sermon. I ran out of patience with his endless, boring banter anf I left before the show was over.

    Lazy performance

by Real Music Lover on 12/8/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

Clearly an off night. Uninspiring, disjointed, didn’t play any hits. I was more entertained by the supporting musicians. It’s disheartening when artists give 50% and think fans won’t know the difference or will just be accepting of their crumbs. I was insulted by his overall lack of effort. He hasn’t completely lost me as a listener, but I will never pay to see him again.

    Riverfront Jazz Festival

by Girtty on 9/5/22The Black Academy of Arts & Letters Complex - Dallas

Ran behind 1.5-2 hours behind each night. Needs to improve on sound engineering and set switch timing. Left early 2 nights due to lack of organization

    Okay

by Lynn on 9/5/22The Black Academy of Arts & Letters Complex - Dallas

The performers were very good but the timing was terrible. The show ran late Friday and Saturday. Since it was hours late those days my group didn't rush to get there on time Sunday and we missed Robert Glasper. Between taking down instruments and setting up the next set it would have been nice to have a DJ to keep thw party going.

    Awesome Concert

by JG on 9/5/22The Black Academy of Arts & Letters Complex - Dallas

Robert Glasper was very good! Loved Kim Burrell and the Smooth Jazz Concert was the best. Boney James was worth the wait! Avery Sunshine was fabulous. Cameo was good, but would have loved more of the 70's/80's R&B music, like last year. Time between sets was too long. Maybe allow us to see the other stage on screen between shows, while we are waiting for next performance. This way there is not so much shuffle. Incognito was really good! Thank you for an awesome weekend of music!

    Riverfront Jazz Festival-Dallas

by Boney James fan on 9/5/22The Black Academy of Arts & Letters Complex - Dallas

For the lineup, the ticket prices were good for a weekend pass. However, they’ve had five years to get it right. There were too many technical issues where they had to keep adjusting for different instruments and this was for every set on the main stage. It took 1 hour between each artist to set up for the next artist. They were 2 hours behind schedule on Saturday the 2nd day. We didn’t stay for the last artist (Cameo) on Saturday night. We heard the group didn’t go on stage until 12:00, when the last artists on each stage were originally scheduled for 8:45 every day. The ticket taker, on Saturday told us that Boney James wasn’t coming. I was so disappointed. What she probably meant was Bob James had to cancel, because we learned that Bob James couldn’t make it and Lee Ritenour replaced him. I didn’t figure this out until Sunday just before the Masters of Smooth went on and the MC announced that “Boney” was going to be the last act. I enjoyed Paul Taylor, Michael Lington, Incognito, and especially Avery Sunshine (whom I’ve never seen in concert.) on Saturday. My husband enjoyed Robert Goasper on Saturday as well as the other artists. The Masters of Smooth-Marion Meadows, Gerald Veasley, Alex Bugnon (wish he had a piano instead of keyboards.), Poogie Bell, and JJ Sansaverino were great on Sunday. Karen White was okay, but she only sang one song at the end their set. “Mr. Boney James” 😀 made it all worthwhile. He always puts on a great show. I love how he interacts with the audience. I wanted to make this an annual event for my husband and I, but with so many technical issues, I don’t know if we’ll return next year. I know the artists were disappointed with the technical issues, but they worked through it. The venue was cold, but we dressed warmer for Sunday’s shows. There were quite a few people complaining about how cold it was.
