Ms. Jones settles into some American Classics

by Cathy on 5/24/23Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

People who showed up hoping for a rehash of her old hits were doubtless disappointed. This was the fifth time I've seen Ms. Jones in concert, and I'm familiar with her recent recording. I came to this show understanding what it would be; Ms. Jones singing (mostly) American classics, jazz, and torch songs. I was not disappointed. It was exactly what I expected. Because of my experiences with her previous concerts, I expected a few flubs, maybe a song restart or two, and that no matter what, Ms. Jones never sounds like her produced/polished albums. She finds her own time, when she's live. She reinterprets her music more than simply performs it. Her voice works perfectly for the classic songs she chose. Her delivery is wonderful, with her mature voice a bit warmer than it used to be. She performed a few treats from her older work, and ended the show with a rousing version of Danny's All-Star Joint. The only downside to the show was that it was her first night of this new tour, and the band is still melding. Their flubs were a bit annoying, but I'm sure they'll sort it out as the tour continues. Don't expect to hear many of her older songs on this tour. Give her new album, Pieces of Treasure, a listen before you go. If you love Ms. Jones or American standards, you'll enjoy your evening. She's my very favorite. She's been the soundtrack of my life for forty years. I love that her performances are a bit quirky.

    Disappointed

by Gb on 5/21/23Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

Started late, played “new album” which was old jazz standards. Would have been fine if she played more than five songs that the audience came to expect. Couldn’t be bothered to play even one encore song.

    A real treasure duo

    by MegP on 9/3/21

I 'grew up' with Rickie Lee Jones and my heart has longed for her in recent years. I was lucky enough to catch her being interviewed for Last Chance Texaco, her memoir (which she modestly mentioned at the Neptune Theater.) I raced to get a copy and read her griping tale of a young, extremely talented woman on fire in the late 60's. If you, too, were a young person growing up in those days, you will love it. It left me with more respect for her than even before. After finishing her book, I went straight to her website- and was overjoyed to see Seattle was the first stop on her tour! Thank you Rickie Lee Jones. We love you so much. Please come back soon!

    Amazing

by Susan C on 9/3/21Neptune Theatre - Seattle

Rickie Lee Jones sounded better than she did the first time I saw her in concert more than 35 years ago! The small venue was the perfect spot!

    Her voice is still great!

by K. on 10/25/19Rialto Square Theatre - Joliet

I would have given a 5 but ....we came to here all her old hits not covers... Rickie doesn’t come around very often she needs to play what the people want to hear...Rialto needs to advertise...what a shame and embarrassment that the theater was only 1/4 filled.

    Sweetness

by Bkfunk on 10/25/19Rialto Square Theatre - Joliet

Rickie Lee Jones has the most amazing voice. Totally enjoyed the newer arrangements of older songs as well as her newer KICKS songs. The Rialto Square Theatre is a beautiful theater that failed to sell out for Ms Jones. It might have been the Tuesday evening date, but I failed to see much advertising for Jones. Same thing happened with Lyle Lovett this month as well. Venue aside, I felt very privileged to be part of her concert tour. Realizing that the venue did not produce, Rickie Lee Jones used her humor and her magical voice to produce an intimate concert for her fans.

    Flying Cowboy

Great show! Richie Lee was truly on point. Her folks were heavenly. She has not lost anything in her performances over the years. She really had a good pulse on her audience which she seem to feed off. She song all her classics which sent us diehards to the moon. The venue was absolutely fabulous! The Victoria Theatre is a worldclass theatre at NJPAC. I've seen many shows there. The seating and acoustics work wonders for the whole experience.

    Ricky Has Special Stuff

    by D. S. on 10/22/19Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

Even in the funky L-shaped venue Ricky Lee delivers a memorable performance, covering multiple genres and rhythms. It felt like a sonic journey to places, both dark and light, within myself that I hadn’t visited in a long, long time. She and the band are so much more than ‘Chuckie’ .. poetic and edgy lyrics, creative harmonies with tight and expressive instrumentals. Over two hours... they work hard for their fans. Sure won me over.

    Cool

by J. H. on 10/18/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Very intimate venue, midweek show. Started with jazzy instrumental and I wondered if it was a warm up band. Then Rickie Lee came on stage and I was relieved. The first few songs included very loose stylings of classics, some too loose for my taste—where it was unclear whether the music would make it to the finish before the vocals caught up. As the set wore on, the timing tightened up and the songs were more recognizable. Rickie Lee is so cool and at ease with herself, she just charms you and you root for her. I enjoyed her introductions to songs, I’m always interested in the background. It felt like the audience was primarily hard core fans and she acknowledged the vibe, which was nice. I enjoyed the show very much!
