Both orchestra and chorus were excellent. Prior to the concert, we listened to a recording, and this was much superior. It was a special joy to watch and listen to the concertmistress. We're glad she returned for this performance. Jim Erb was called out after the Saturday evening performance. We wish that had happened again on Sunday. We attended, in part, because it was the 40th anniversary of the chorus he began.

    Lollipop series is a MUST

by SLM99 on 5/11/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

What a joy to have my daughter introduced to the arts in such a delightful, hands on experience. She loved meeting the dancers and they were so gracious and sweeet to her. The instrument petting zoo is great - love the interaction. The performance was a scooch long for a 4 year old - but overall the interaction and frequency of dance was wonderful. We will definatly attend again and I have referred several friends. Thank you for thinking to make the younger children a priority for entering the petting zoo area. More kid friendly snacks would have been my only suggestion - alot of sweets or items with nuts.

What an amazing way to expose children to the art of music and dance. The most comfortable setting I had ever experienced and I wasn't worried about my fidgety 6 year old bothering other patrons. My daughter started playing the violin in September and this was a great way to introduce her to the theatre and ettiquette without having to worry too much about it. Awesome series....cannot wait to go again.

Soloist, flutes, horns, cellos and everybody else!

by johnglynn01 on 5/3/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

So much going on in this concert. Too much for me to comment on all of it. The principal flute truly earned her bacon in this concert, great job, 2nd flute was no slouch either! Several passages in the 3rd movement of the concerto required deft timing and confidence to play alongside the soloist and maintain tempo. The cellos worked as their own brand of special ops, executing their mission with fantastic combination of joy and ability. Not to be left out, the French horns stormed the castle with accuracy and thunder, especially in the 5th symphony. Speaking of which, what was Prokofiev thinking? This piece should be called Concerto for Friggn' Everybody, and leave it at that. The Richmond Symphony time and time again shows itself to be the great organization that we all want it to be. Hats off to everybody. Cheers, John

    Balls, bangs, and planets

by davincitrout on 4/4/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

Let's skip over the basketball game. Nice to be able to watch that--sound was great. Let's skip over the Planets. Very well done. Only problem was that with the VCU game delaying the start, was praying for it to end. Let's talk about Evelyn Glennie--amazing? Yes. Innovative? Mostly. Enjoyable-- very. I especially liked the 1st and 4th movements when the instruments were offbeat (but not offbeat) and tested the limits. I had no idea of the creative nature of her show, but truly enjoyed the ability to make music in odd ways and make odd music as well.

    Evelyn Glennie - UFO concert

by Anonymous on 4/4/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

It was weird. The Symphony has good musicians and Evelyn Glennie is very unique. I had seen her on YouTube and was very much looking forward to the concert, but the pieces selected were just weird. They played them well, I just didn't care for the selections. It was not what I expected, so I was disappointed.

    Glennie, a new experience

by lifelonglistener on 4/4/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

Evelyn Glennie was fantastic as she slithered among her instruments making every sort of sound. A beautiful performance! The enhanced orchestra for the Holst work was in fine form throughout.

The Music of James Bond was outstanding!!

by Benjamin12 on 3/15/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

This concert was a great idea for old and new Symphony fans alike. All the songs were instantly recognizable which only adds to the enjoyment of the music. I wish there were other series along these lines. Our group consisted of 19 years to 55 years old and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Great idea, great implementation!! Wouldn't hesitate to go again!!
