    The Richmond Ballet soars!

by chrisjr on 3/30/11Studio Theatre - Richmond

I honestly had no idea what to expect coming to see this performance of The Richmond Ballet. It surpassed my wildest expectations and turned what I thought I knew about ballet on its head and hit me with a surge of creative energy. I recommend seeing this performance to anyone who is a fan of ballet, dance, or the arts in general!

    Giselle:

by Kazore on 2/23/11Richmond Ballet - Richmond

Although we are in the 21st Century, when I watched Giselle, I felt like I had traveled back in time to the 19th Century. The Duke Dancers looked like real Dukes and the Wilis could not have looked any more than the Wilis I had imagined. The stage, and the music performed by the Richmond Symphony was carefully selected and set to create this gap between the present and the past. This classical and romantic setting of course could not have been accomplished without the skillful dancers and the elegant costumes used during the performance on February 11, 2001 at the Richmond Ballet. In Act I: “A Vintner’s House in a Pleasant Valley in Germany” was a village setting and Tony Tucci, the lighting designer ensured that the lights emphasized a warm and what I felt a breezy day out. The warm color lights that Tucci used in Act I, complimented the sunny dresses that Giselle and the female villagers wore. The dresses especially the one Giselle wore had their own personality. The dress that Cecile Tuzii wore moved gracefully and at different speeds from her character, Giselle. The Dukes were dressed richly and boldly explaining the reason why their movements were restricted on the stage. In Act II: “Giselle’s Grave in the Forest” was an opposite setting in terms of the day and the changed from warm colored costumes and lights used in Act I to cool colors. The Wilis were dressed in very frail dresses that made them look as light as if they were actually flying. In this act, Thomas Garret who played, Albrecht, the Duke of Silesia was dressed in a black top, which might have signified the foreshadowing of a tragedy.

    Giselle- A Valentine Treat!

by HeartArts on 2/15/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

We had not been to the ballet in some time and the TV ads got our attention. We were not disappointed! The combination of incredible dancers, wonderful music, beautiful costumes and set - all in a great theater; it was magical! What's not to love? The refreshments! Can we really not take in all this magic without red wine and M&M's? The people with the red wine always sit in the center of the aisle and are the last to arrive (both before the show and after intermission), tripping over you while you pray the red wine does not spill on you! The candy wrapper's crinkle is matched with the person sitting behind crunching in regular intervals. Theaters must make lots of money to put up with the extra mess refreshments in the theater itself create. Can Americans really not sit for 2 hours without sweets and drink? It so detracts from the performance! Keep refreshments in the lobby! Show some respect for our talented artists!

by George0819 on 2/15/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

The Richmond Ballet greatly exceeded my expectations for this ballet. I was delighted with the quality of their performance and the overall skill and enthusiasm of the entire staff. I highly recommend both the ballet, this company, and the musical accompaniment to all.

    Shira Shines

by BalletDreamer on 2/15/11Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - Richmond

The new and improved Carpenter Theater is a wonderful showcase for ballet and music. The two ballet productions that I attended this year were remarkable in many ways. The costumes and sets all appear new, very appropriate for the ballet, and elegant. This is a lovely beginning even before the ballet begins. Shira Lanyi danced lyrically through her role as Giselle. Shira's talent and the emotion she gives to her role definitely exceed her young years. The company complemented the lead roles with exquisite precision and grace. I hope that this ballet travels to other communities in Virginia. It is too wonderful to be limited to four days! Bravo!
