What a wonderful evening! The musicians were in tune with each other on so many levels, and they were deeply in tune with the packed house. We were one, with them.
I have seen Red Horse perform numerous times and always enjoy their performances. This was a fantastic performance. The venue had great acoustics and the enthusiastic audience made the performance even better.
Even though they did not play my favorite Gorka tunes, they are so talented especially Gorka with his great voice and wonderful lyrics, that it was incredibly enjoyable. We were up close and their playing is so great. I also love Lucy for her voice and her lyrics. I had not seen Eliza and although I liked her voice, her songs are not as melodic as the other two
I got an email from San Diego, with the Birchmere schedule and link attached. He said "go!" We sat up front for a very enjoyable performance from Red Horses' current CD. Kaplansky, Gilkyson and Gorka are old pros (literally). The music and the patois were well delivered and comfortable, sort of like going to your favorite diner to eat.
Loved the singing, Loved the guitars, Hated all the talking!! I think they could have actually sang a few more songs if they wouldn't have talked so much!
I expected a really good concert; this was totally awesome! The songs were musically interesting, the lyrics intelligent. The three singer/songwriters, Lucky Kaplansky, John Gorka, and Eliza Gilkyson, obviously got along well and made really nice harmonies, always having a good sense of humor. It helps that the concert was in the legendary Birchmere, legendary for its perfect acoustics and sight lines from virtually all of its 500 seats. The concert lasted almost 2 1/2 hours, including a 20-minute intermission.
I have seen Lucy Kaplansky and John Gorka perform as solo performers and also saw part of Red Horse's set at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this summer but this is the first time that I have seen Red Horse for an entire show. Their performance was fantastic. They are all fantastic performers and songwriters individually but their collaboration was fantastic. I will definitely see them again when they are performing in my area.
What a lovely setting...and a lovely trio. John Gorka's dry, stuttering wit, surrounded by the wonderful talents of Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson. A show one just didn't want to end...Great mini-"songwriters in the round" with a twist-vibe. For fans of great singer-songwriters, this was a show not to be missed.
Red Horse is a triple crown winner. The combination of Kaplansky, Gorka and Gilkyson provide an evening of unsurpassed melody, lyrics, and harmonies. Individually or as a group they are truly worth hearing.
