Real Salt Lake History

Real Salt Lake arrived for the 2005 season and have accomplished much within a short time in the league. After rising through the Western Conference in their early seasons, the club won the 2009 MLS Cup in only their fifth year in existence. Salt Lake remained a playoff mainstay and were runners-up in the 2013 MLS Cup, 2010 Supporters’ Shield, and the 2013 U.S. Open Cup, as well as the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2011. The team advanced to the MLS Cup Conference Semifinals in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2019. 

Real Salt Lake have accrued several accolades throughout the years for their distinguished players, including 2006 Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, 2010 Defender of the Year Jámison Olave, 2010 Newcomer of the Year Álvaro Saborío, and 2018 Rookie of the Year Corey Baird. The team has retired the numbers of former forward and captain Jason Kreis and All-Star midfielder Javier Morales.

Real Salt Lake at America First Field

Since coming into the league, Real Salt Lake has cultivated a passionate fanbase at America First Field, formerly known as Rio Tinto Stadium. The 20,213-seat facility in Sandy, Utah opened in 2008 and earned the nickname "The Riot" as a play on its previous name and raucous atmosphere. The stadium, which is located approximately 15 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, is shared with the Utah Royals of the National Women’s Soccer League.
