About

RACHEL YAMAGATA IN CONCERT:

Indie singer-songwriter and critical darling Rachel Yamagata is nothing if not fearless. Over the past two decades Yamagata has established herself as one of the most fiercely original voices in contemporary pop music with her increasingly ambitious recordings and fiery live performances. In concert she holds nothing back, delivering her poetic lyrics with unbridled passion and wrenching every last drop of emotion out of deeply personal songs like "Over" and "Nobody." A talented multi-instrumentalist, Yamagata moves fluidly between piano and electric guitar in concert, conjuring an ever-evolving array of textures and moods to suit her dynamic compositions. Her backing band keeps pace brilliantly, contributing sparse percussion and haunting backup vocals that complement her expressive songs without distracting from their emotional impact. At the center of it all is Yamagata's smoky, soulful voice – a steady beacon that makes even her most melancholy moments feel like a spiritual awakening.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Arlington, VA-born Rachel Yamagata got her start in the late '90s fronting Chicago funk-rock group Bumpus. She spent six years recording and touring with the band, then left in 2001 to start her solo career. After being picked up by Arista Records, Yamagata released a self-titled 2002 EP that she followed-up in 2004 with her debut full-length Happenstance. The album was a critical and commercial success, earning praise for its formidable songwriting and cracking the Top 20 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. Following a high-profile 2007 tour with pop princess Mandy Moore, Yamagata returned to the studio and recorded her 2008 sophomore album Elephants…Teeth Sinking into Heart. Critic's praised that album's dark, brooding sound, and fans agreed – the record peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's Top Digital Albums chart. Since then Yamagata has continued to innovate, exploring laid-back blues-rock on 2011's Chesapeake and employing a wide variety of styles on 2016's genre-defying Tightrope Walker. Through it all, Rachel Yamagata has maintained an uncompromising creative vision and a sterling reputation as a performer that continues to draw ticket buyers out in droves.

What a Great Show! Rachael was Fantastic!

by Sin09 on 8/11/17Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

First time at Delmar Hall. Sounds was awesome. Got a seat at this general admission show arriving soon after doors opened. Staff was welcoming even as they used the metal detector wand and searched my purse. The show was fantastic. Rachael brought up a super fan who sung a duet with her. Fan was really into it and so was the audience. One of the best concert moments ever.

    Amazing Rachael, rude audience

by Anonymous on 11/15/16Triple Rock Social Club - Minneapolis

Rachael and her band were really amazing, the only drawback is two audience in the front row was way too rude and annoying. They were supposed to stand in the back but they made it all the way to the first row by pushing other people. One woman was sitting ON the performance stage (yes and later she stood up and standing on the stage) and the other was yelling all the time. My friend and I unfortunately stood behind them and get kicked/ pushed a zillion times during the concert.

    What That Lady Said

by Eyesjustlooking on 10/11/16Triple Rock Social Club - Minneapolis

First, I can't thank the staff at Triple Rock Social Club enough for accommodating me and my cane. :) I have been wanting to see Rachael in concert for over ten years but have not previously lived in a city where she stopped for her tours, and have been very sick for six years and had ten brain surgeries in quick succession until the doctors gave up on me and decided to stop operating. Seeing Rachael basically turned into a bucket list show for me. Everyone in the band had great energy and I loved every minute of the show from beginning to end. Pressing Strings was a great choice for the opening act, and I love that Rachael broke from the planned set list and got Jordan to sing the duet. I know that being an independent artist without the backing of a label can be downright frightening, but keep making amazing music and staying true to yourself, Rachael, and we as your loyal fans will keep trying to bring more people to your circle.

More magic by the divine Miss Y

by Ryfanfargo on 10/10/16Triple Rock Social Club - Minneapolis

Pick up her new album Tightrope Walker. Then make absolutely sure you catch her show, a mix of new and older classics, if she,s nearby. This is the sixth time I have made the 500 round trip from Fargo/Moorhead, worth it every time. Great band as usual. Opening act Pressing Strings also very impressive. She seems to have everything in place for success. Should that happen, maybe she would come to Fargo and save me the trip! Don't laugh, this small city has become an electric happening place, with a thriving arts scene, 20,000 college students and a lot of young adults. We also have some great venues for small and larger musical acts. Hey, Mandy Moore has played here at least a couple of times, and she packed them in at the Historic Fargo Theater on Broadway!
