R.E.M. IN CONCERT:
Legendary alt-rockers R.E.M. are known for their raw energy and the intensity of frontman Michael Stipe. The band's live concerts feature mesmerizing renditions of their intricate songs, anchored by impressive musicianship and tight vocal harmonies by Stipe and bassist Mike Mills. Despite an amicable split in 2011, rumors persist that the band may reunite for a new album and tour, giving fans something to look forward to in 2014.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
With a unique alternative rock sound that largely influenced the direction alternative and indie rock would take in the '90s and 00's, R.E.M is of the most important American rock bands of all time. Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980, R.E.M. operated primarily as a local underground act until their 1987 album Document earned them breakthrough success with ubiquitous '80s hits "The One I Love" and "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine). That same year Rolling Stone would declare them America’s Best Rock and Roll Band, and a string of critically acclaimed LPs would follow, resulting in over 85 million album sales worldwide.
I saw them on Jones Beach and it was the night the stands got struck by lightning. Hearing Stipe sing "it's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine" in the pouring rain is one of the greatest concert moments I've experienced. The lightning was incredible.
