I flew from Atlanta and was not disappointed. My only concern was that some of the acts were not polished enough to share the same stage as some. Nexus should have gone on first, because they had no stage presence and the lead singer was coaching the background singers throughout the whole song. The other singer held on to her shorts and did not interact with the crowd at all. Screen the perfomers a little better. But overall the venue was great and all the rest of the acts.

NO REAL HONORS FOR TEENA MARIE HERE

by FAR10 on 2/22/11B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Last night I attended the show, an event sponsored by Singersroom. It was advertised as Honoring the late Great Teena Marie but that was only for a minute. I was there only because I am a long time Teena Marie fan. I have to tell you that this show was locally based artists performing covers of other artists & maybe some original material but nothing of Teena's music. Before the actual performers started coming out on the stage to perform there was a dj who played a lot of R & B songs and he included among all the other songs, I Need Your Lovin & Square Biz & later a portion of I'm A Sucker For Your Love. The host of the show Keedar Whittle spoke a little about Teena and referred to her as "the essence of R & B music". Up on the screen they showed us a video (which most of us fans have already seen) of the last interview Teena did for Singersroom.com which was for Black Music Month I believe in 2009. Other than that there was no other reference to Teena the rest of the night which was unfortunately cut short for I believe two artists who were unable to perform because there was not enough time. They did mange to squeeze in for a few minutes a wonderful group of guys who I believe are the group called Project 718. Q Parker of the group 112 performed several songs near the end of the show and I believe that cut their time and the other two acts that never got to perform.. The show had to end at 11pm because of another show that was following that one. I was hoping throughout the show that at least one or two performers would do something of Teena's but it did not happen. Personally I don't think most of them could do justice to any of her songs anyway. Out of the group of artists that performed, I was impressed by only two which I enjoyed, Rico Davis & the flamboyant Charlie Perry who reminded me of the singing style & stage presentation of the late r & b singer Sylvester. Teena Marie was a regular performer at B B Kings Blues Club & Grill and I miss seeing her there every year. I'm still hoping for a proper tribute & honor for Teena here in New York City.
