About

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows six awkward adolescents through their daunting and hilarious championship quest. As they navigate the tournament’s pressures, the eccentric coterie finds a new sense of belonging.  Along the way, they learn that there is more to life than winning a trophy. This charming coming-of-age tale also invites four volunteers from the audience to participate in each performance, ensuring new and unexpected comedy every night. Peter Flynn (1776) returns to direct this heartwarmingly quirky Tony-winning musical comedy.

    Cute and entertaining!

    by DCGirlatU2Concert on 5/20/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

My group and I thoroughly enjoyed this show and had a lot of laughs. If you are looking for an award-winning musical like Phantom of the Opera (my all-time favorite), then this show is not for you. If you're looking for something fun and entertaining, you'll love it. As for the venue, Ford's Theatre is always terrific. It's small so there isn't a bad seat in the house, and it's historic value and atmosphere is priceless. The museum, located below the theatre, is cool, but it was freezing! Lighten up on the air conditioning! The temp in the theatre itself was perfect.

    Bee's a winner!

by Qapla on 5/20/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

An outstanding collection of talented actors, singers, and dancers--all of them in the same bodies! The musical score, choreography, and script all were worthy of Broadway or the West End and we were so glad we took the opportunity to see it in historic Ford's there, where after the renovations, you can actually sit on the seats and hear the performers. A great experience!

Loved the up to date news bits, the quirky intros to spellers...especially the 4 spellers from the audience. Great spelling words! The cast was well chosen...good acting, singing, and dancing. We laughed a lot!!

I was born and raised Putnam County NY and thought this would be a great sister reunion play to see. It was great. We laughed so hard. Ford's theater was so beautiful. The restoration was spot on. I loved it when the cast came into the audience interacting with us.

    Just an average show

by LindaFromColorado on 5/18/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

Not bad, not great. I couldn't understand most of the words in the songs but spoken dialog was fine. I think the actors were talented but the material just so-so. I wanted to see a show in Ford's Theatre was the main reason I went, and I had heard good things about this show but was not too impressed.

    Great Play!

by SheLeo on 5/14/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

The play itself was great. But the performers really brought it to life! Barf was probably my favorite character (and the Comfort Counselor lol). Well done to everyone! Also the audience participation portion was an added bonus. I wish we could have arrived in time to sign up!
