About

Teller and Todd Robbins invite Death out to play in PLAY DEAD, a new hilarious and spirit-shaking Off-Broadway show inspired by "Midnight Spook Shows," an American institution from the 1930s to the 1970s.  As the guide for the evening, Robbins draws audiences into an unknown haunted world full of frightful surprises and diabolical laughter.  Although very much a theatrical work, it is hardly a typical "play," but rather a fun, irresistible thriller - here and now in an "abandoned" theater, illuminated by a single ghostlight - in which audiences face their fears while being surrounded by ethereal sights, sounds and even touches of the returning dead - all achieved by wry, ingenious storytelling and uncanny, awe-inspiring stage illusions.  Time Out New York was right in saying that a night at PLAY DEAD is a "great date."

    Fun Macabre Show

by SteveKOB on 9/10/11Players Theater - NYC

Play Dead is a fun macabre show with death as it's theme. Somehow, morbid stories of death and murder are mixed with magic and illusion and made highly entertaining. The Players Theater is a small intimate venue in the Village with plenty of streets to stroll and places to eat.

by Ouija on 7/30/11The Players Theatre - New York

I recommend everyone to go see it!!! I really enjoyed it!! Went to NY for the weekend with my daughter for her 20th!! We had a blast attending this show. Has so many tricks I couldn't figure them out. I almost pee in my pants, ok, I know it's gross, but I didn't. I did scream a LOT!!!!! Todd Robbins is incredible and his little son absolutely ADORABLE!!! (not part of the show), but I bet you he will grow-up doing just what daddy does. He was even wearing his little white suit. Simply adorable!! Absolutely entretaining! I was horrified, but did enjoy it a LOT!!! I sitll can't believe it, but we survived!!

    Awesome Show!

by BolterC on 7/26/11The Players Theatre - New York

If you like the spookier, darker side of magic, story telling and the bizarre then this is the show for you! Unfortunately we got to see the very last show they were doing after almost a year's run. There are rumors it may be back around October so keep your eyes peeled. This is not a show to pass up!!

I took my husband to Play Dead as a birthday treat and we both thoroughly enjoyed the performance. There was never a dull moment with plenty of thrills and chills and the host was excellent.

    Brilliant Theater, Chills Galore

by ktkeith on 7/25/11The Players Theatre - New York

"Play Dead" is a brilliantly crafted theatrical event written and directed by two consummate showpeople who both love the history of traveling theater, and have re-created some of that history on stage. It is an old-time "spook show" - a kind of low-rent vaudeville performance involving magic tricks, story-telling, illusions, mentalism and spiritualism, all presented with cheesy props and spooky overtones in a darkened theater. Such shows played at midnight in rented theaters in small towns on the traveling-theater circuit, many decades ago. Todd Robbins and Teller lovingly - and scarily - re-create such an event, delivering a funny, macabre, thrilling and educational performance that is as much a paean to old-time theater as it is an enervating night out for their audiences. Robbins is a master lecturer and sideshow performer (not surprisingly - he teaches that and more as director of the Coney Island Sideshow). He commands the stage, creating a thrilling, and often touching, atmosphere as he effortlessly reels off an amazing spectrum of performance skills, seamlessly tying them into the evening's thanatological theme, taking the audience wherever he chooses and yet always letting them down gently. It's a beautiful master class in a performance style that is all but forgotten. And as pure theater, it can't be beat. The audience screamed again and again, laughed and gasped and were amazed over and over. The final act is worth the price of admission by itself. This is amazing theater that you'll never see again, brilliantly done, and just a bang-up good time as well. If you missed it, you really missed something.
