    Pirates was well done

    by no2duis on 3/13/14Southern Theatre - Columbus

Even though this is done in English, I found it very difficult to understand both the dialoge or the singing. Male voices were easier than female and both were hard with both male and female.

Would recommend this show to anyone.

    by Sailor46 on 3/12/14Southern Theatre - Columbus

Because of the smaller size of the Southern there is a feeling of intimacy that is not present in the larger theaters. The presentation was very good, the leading lady I felt was outstanding. Many sopranos when reaching for that high end of their range become shrill and she seemed not to have that problem. The choreography, somewhat simple as is the nature of the show, was performed quite well. Of course my favorite part of Pirate's is always the performance of "Modern Major General". All in all a very good production. Because of the simplicity of the show I would not rate it five star because of the lack of special effects, scenery, and endearing musical score, however, it was the best performance of Pirates I have seen. I did have a little trouble hearing the performers on stage. I don't believe this was do to the orchestra being too loud, but rather stage amplification just a little too low.

    Pirates of Penzance

by ChurchManiac on 3/12/14Southern Theatre - Columbus

I was in this as a sophomore in high school, so this was nostalgic to hear it again for the first time in that long (I'm now 60). The costumes and choreography were great, and overall the production was very good, and with some added liberties taken (random insertions of O-H-I-O with the audience, references to "Homeland Security", and interacting with one of the orchestra members, to name the ones I remember, which were clearly not in the script), it was very funny (it is a comic light opera after all). That said, we sat in the nosebleed section in the Great Southern in downtown Columbus, and it became clear that the speakers for the room were oriented more toward the floor sections, and we often had trouble hearing the soloists. I knew the lines well from my high school experience, but our guests had never heard it before, and so had a hard time following it because of this difficulty. When the notes were high, the orchestra tended to drown out the singers. Speaking of the orchestra, it was a pared down version of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Someone must have called in sick at the last minute (brass or woodwinds) because there were clearly some inner parts in some chords that were blatantly missing -- especially noticeable during the Overture). More troubling, however, was the frequent inability of the orchestra and the singers to stay together. This was very noticeable very often. I don't know if the conductor had a bee in his bonnet to stay at a certain tempo no matter what, or whether the singers couldn't see or hear him, or were just ignoring him. But the effect was that the orchestra was racing ahead to its own tune and the singers were left in the dust. As important as the orchestra is, it IS, after all, only the accompanment. And as any good accompanist knows, you ALWAYS FOLLOW whoever you are accompanying (in this case, the singers). That did not happen here, and it happened with such frequency and in such glaring proportions as to make me wonder if the two ensembles had even rehearsed this together in this venue before they presented it to the public. The fact that the showing I attended was the closing show (the third of three performances) made this inability for the two groups to stay together all the more dumbfounding, since they had already had two performances to rectify that problem. Nonetheless, despite this problem, I thoroughly enjoyed the program

    Please shut up!

by eugeorama on 3/11/14Southern Theatre - Columbus

What an excellent and sincerely entertaining performance! All lead roles were delivered with competence, confidence, and the exactly correct dramatic sense and naive humor needed for this work. Unfortunately, almost all of the first act was marred by hidden, headset-wearing lighting crew engaged in very loud conversation. The southern Theater has fine acoustics; it is very well designed to carry sound. Thus, the near-constant loud talking was successful in distracting and irritating the entire balcony audience. It took far too long for ushers to track down the offending crewman and put a stop to the cacophonous interference. Without this distraction throughout the first act, I would have offered an enthusiastic five stars . . . and I'm not even much of a fan of the Gilbert & Sullivan style.

    Pirates was refreshing

by Anonymous on 3/10/14Southern Theatre - Columbus

My husband and I saw Pirates of Penzance, even though it was Preview Night the show went on without any issues. The Orchestra was amazing and the story line very amusing. If you have not seen this Opera I would recommend anyone of all ages to see it.

    Classic Gilbert and Sullivan

    by LLC273 on 3/10/14Southern Theatre - Columbus

Thoroughly enjoyable. Beautiful venue. My only disappointment was that there seemed to be no where close by to have dinner or drinks afterward. I am new to Columbus and not willing to wander about without a destination. The folks at the theater could only say to try the Westin Hotel next door which appeared dead. What an opportunity for a nearby restaurant or bar to advertize on the printed out ticket or in the program.
