About

PHOX IN CONCERT:

Watching indie pop rockers Phox perform live you get the overwhelming sense that they're not just bandmates -- they're family. The six musicians are longtime friends from high school and their undeniable chemistry and camaraderie create a warm, inviting atmosphere whenever they're on stage. Leading their mellow musical arrangements is singer Monica Martin, whose smoky voice sounds like a cross between Feist and Regina Spektor. The band employs a mix of instruments in concert, including guitar, banjo, clarinet, bass, and flute that blend seamlessly with Martin's soaring voice on crowd favorites like "Slow Motion" and "1936". The group lets loose with bursts of whistling, hand clapping, and plenty of jokes between songs, giving ticket buyers a wonderfully blissful live experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Indie folk pop collective Phox is comprised of guitarist Matt Holmen, bassist J. Sean Krunnfusz, singer Monica Martin, drummer Dave Roberts, keyboardist Matteo Roberts, and guitarist/banjo player Zach Johnston. The six musicians attended the same high school in Baraboo, WI, but went their separate ways after graduation. Eventually they reunited and moved into a house in Madison, where they spent two years writing and recording music influenced by artists like Feist, Sufjan Stevens, and James Blake. Thanks to well-received local shows and online buzz around their high-quality homemade music videos the band's popularity grew tremendously, and soon they were performing at South by Southwest, Lollapalooza, and London's iTunes Festival. In 2014 they penned a deal with Brooklyn-based indie label Partisan Records and released their self-titled debut album. Boasting production by Brian Joseph -- whose credits include Bon Iver and The Fray -- the collection of soulful folk pop songs earned them legions of fans and made them a must-see live act.

    My Heart was so happy!

    5 days later and I'm still not over this concert. Listening to their discography alone really does not do them enough justice. Such and enthusiastic & friendly group of people. Monica Martin is bae. Cuddle magic was also incredible, and I loved that they hopped into the audience with their quiet performance. It was my first time at Brighton, and it was definitely one of the more roomy but intimate venues I've been to. 10/10, can't wait to see them/ go to Brighton again.

    Third time seeing these guys but their first geadlining show. They were better than ever. The band was impeccable. Each song was perfectly executed and the venue was amazing. Hope their hiatus doesn't last too long!

    Great musicians, rapport, and the lead singer's voice was phenomenal (as was the a cappella singing with two of the musicians)

    PHOX = amaze

    I have been following PHOX since early summer 2013 when I stumbled across their phenomenal EP "Confetti" on bandcamp and been shamelessly promoting them ever since. MHOW was the second time I've seen them (first when they were opening for Laura Mvula's tour). Amazing as always. Wish the MHOW crowd wasn't quite so outspoken, somewhat took away from the band's performance

    PHOX is fantastic and if you get a chance to see them at an amazing venue like the Music Hall of Williamsburg, you have to go.

    Ventures on a Cold day in NY

    Honestly I didn't know weather or not if I should go, but my friend told me about Phox playing in Brooklyn, so I listened to a couple of songs and told her I'm down to go. One of the best decisions I have made this year! The opening act Field Report was great. I loved them as an opening act. I didn't know their songs beforehand, but they really stuck with me. They had a great performance. SO then I thought, wow how is Phox to follow up with that? I must say, I absolutely love Monica Martin's voice. Whatever conversation you wanted to had during the concert had to wait because her voice is so beautiful. And then you throw in the band and they were amazing with on point harmony and they would get into the groove. It was phenomenal. I think what I loved the most about the show was that everyone really loved performing for the crowd, I appreciated that. I would definitely go to another show and I recommend both artists.
