This event was awful. It was not the proper venue for a poetry reading, even by the esteemed Sonia Sanchez, especially at midnight on a Friday. Kindred the Family Stone didn't seem to hold the crowd's attention and I don't even know where to start with Questlove. It was like he wanted the crowd to behold his DJing skills but not actually party or you know, dance. Completely different vibe than Biz Markie or Pete Rock. The only redeeming aspect of the evening was that the proceeds went to fund scholarships. Otherwise, it was a complete waste of time and money.

old school/ kindred album release/ poetry reading

by ergrantervin on 8/10/11The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

In the beginning, this seemed like it was going to be a wonderful, "get yo groove on" event. However, things quickly changed when the music stopped, the MC asked everyone to quiet down and Ms. Sonia Sanchez appeared on the stage to recite some of her poetry! I mean, REALLY??!! Couldn't this have been done at the beginning before any of the music started? THEN, Kindred (the husband & wife duo who used to do clean, soulful jams) comes to the stage and performs several quasi hip-hop songs (that no one has ever heard before) from their new CD. I think they performed one song from a former CD that was familiar. Finally, Questlove arrives and starts playing some old skool jams, which is cool, but I don't think he ever stopped!! After about an hour of this, my friends and I decided to call it a night and leave. This event should have been advertised as an old school party w/ special guests Sonia Sanchez and Kindred!! Our expectations would have been very different. We would have been prepared to chill and maybe kick it just a lil' bit. Overall, we were very disappointed and ended up spending the rest of the night in our hotel room watching TV.
