Penn State Nittany Lions Men's Basketball History

Penn State men’s basketball has had many winning moments over the years. They include nine NCAA tournament berths, including a Final Four run, and 11 appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (including two championships since 2009).

Penn State's lone Final Four appearance came in 1954. The Lions were coached that year by Elmer Gross and led by junior Jesse Arnelle, who scored 21 points per game and hauled in nearly 12 rebounds per game. After dropping Toledo, ousting Louisiana State and dispatching Notre Dame, Penn State fell to La Salle in the semifinal, 69-54. The Nittany Lions would go on to beat USC, 70-61, in the national third-place game.

In 2017-18, the Nittany Lions took home an NIT championship. As a No. 4 seed, Penn State knocked off No. 5 seed Temple, No. 1 seed Notre Dame and No. 2 seed Marquette to reach the semifinals, where they romped past Mississippi State. They then beat Utah in the final at Madison Square Garden. In the 2023 NCAA Tournament, Penn State made the second round.

    Ok seats

by Kari on 1/1/24Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

Thought we were getting great seats. When we got to our seat there was a large water container right in front of our 4 seats and none of us could see anything going on on the court. We asked the team if they could move the water container but they ignored us. We went to the ticket booth and told them about it so they moved us to a better location.

It was a tremendous 18-point second half comeback by Penn State to beat Ohio State 83-80. It was truly an electric atmosphere in the Bryce Jordan Center, a wonderful basketball venue. From the opening player introductions to the final buzzer, it was a captivating experience.

by 3 Presidents on 3/9/23Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

Didn’t expect to enjoy the view from our seats, but they were fantastic. We could see the entire court and the angle was awesome! The best part is the buzzer beater shot for the win! The crowd went absolutely wild and we were able to see that with a Birds Eye view! We Are…

    Heart pounding!

by CK on 3/8/23Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

I was really not excited after the first half but was hoping the Lions could make some adjustments (stop throwing the ball away!) in the second half! My son love Dread and he was the catalyst in that comeback! Excited to see if they can keep the momentum going into the Big 10 tournament!

Sat in section 111. Had a group of 15. Had a great time! Got a chance to hang with the players and have some of my basketball team do photo and autograph opportunities and we are thankful and enjoyed our chance to have the experience on senior day!

    Poor basketball Venue

by Smitty on 1/24/23Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

While the BJC is a nice arena, as a basketball venue it has a lot to be desired. Fans are to far away, and sight lines are poor

    BJC men’s basketball

by HW on 1/24/23Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

BJC has some very good seats to watch and others not good. The team is very good and enjoyed the game. Always better when they win which this team usually does.
