About

"Watching Patti Smith perform live – for the first, second or fifth time – feels like a life-changing experience.”- THE INDEPENDENT (Field Day)

“It’s a performance destined for the festival’s All-Time Greatest list” – Glastonbury Mojo

It has been eight years since Patti Smith ‘the godmother of punk’ last toured Australia, and nearly 41 years since the release of her first and most celebrated recording Horses. Horses was conceived to be, in her description, “three chord rock merged with the power of the word.”

“Patti Smith gives a fresh force to songs she wrote 40 years ago” –Metro

“Horses and its shamanistic punk poet siren are undiminished 40 years on” theartsdesk.com

Best-selling author, performance poet & visual artist Patti Smith’s list of artistic accomplishments doesn’t end there. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, recipient of the Polar Music Prize, a human rights activist and also holds the honour of “Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres”  from the French Ministry of Culture.

She will be accompanied by two members of the original group, Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty, bassist / keyboardist Tony Shanahan, who has been a part of her band for twenty years and Andy York to perform Horses in its entirety during this not-to-be missed tour, as well as several time-honoured favourites.

In November of 1975, Patti Smith and her band recorded her debut album Horses at the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York City. An album that has come to be regarded as a seminal and landmark recording, that continues to have resonance and relevance for succeeding generations of musicians and artists. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Smith honour the lasting influence of Horses on this exclusive Australian tour.

“This is protest music. But it is protest with a fierce edge that seamlessly weaves a new politics into a rich legacy of rock-and-roll rebellion: She is celebrating a connection between music and movements that is swaggering and confident and more than ready to declare—as Smith does—that “we’re gonna change the fucking world!” ” – The Nation

“It will be a true, proud celebration.”  Patti Smith

Patti Smith & Family at UPAC

by Erndam24 on 11/15/23Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

Patti Smith gave a great performance backed by her son Jackson on guitar, daughter Jessie Paris on piano and long time Patti Smith Group member Tony Shanahan on bass, piano & guitar. I was a little disappointed that Patti performed songs by Bob Dylan, Neil Young & Television in lieu of her own hits. The only classics of her own that she sang were “Dancing Barefoot” “Because the Night” & “People Have The Power”. She also read her poem “Land”. Jessie Paris Smith reminded me so much of her mother in her younger years, with her almost awkward shyness when asked to sing “Because the Night” with Patti. Overall it was a pleasure to see a legend once again.

    She’s still amazing

by Co on 11/14/23Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

I did miss Lenny and would have loved a drummer but Patti was passionate and fantastic and her voice sounded wonderful. She deserves a better band but it was cute to have her kids there too.

    Memorable

by Ron on 11/14/23Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

Patti has grown into a great artist. During her poetic declamation during All Along the Watchtower, I burst into tears. The woman next to me shouted, "Thank you! Thank you!"Extraordinary. Thank you, Patti.

Patti and her band rocked! Gloria, Because the Night , I had too much to dream were powerful ! I especially loved her encore song, Neil Young’s After the Goldrush. This was a great concert . The Anthem venue is excellent - not too large, good acoustics and a super friendly staff !

Patti Smith still has the power

by Jack on 9/20/23The Anthem - Washington

Fantastic show! Not as much energy as when I saw her 45 years ago, but animated, agitating, and showing herself to still be an icon of punk/post-punk/new wave. Great venue, too.

    Luminescent

by Suzwake on 9/20/23The Anthem - Washington

Audiences are always captivated and incredibly appreciative of Patti and at the Anthem in DC it was another fantastic show. The venue is pretty new and really nice. Have followed her for 50 years and seen her 7 times. This show was a little different she played less of horses and many songs I had not seen her do before. It was sublime and amazing and if you’ve never seen her by all means if she comes to your town you absolutely must go.

    Outstanding performance

by WyldWoodsWomyn on 9/19/23The Anthem - Washington

Patti Smith never fails to give it her all and the performance at the Anthem was one of her best. In fact, this was one of the top 5 concerts (any artist ort group) in my memory, and I've been going to concerts for 50 years. Which could mean I just have a lousy memory, which I may, but not about good concerts. lol

    Patti Smith is a legend...

by Patrick on 9/19/23The Anthem - Washington

Patti Smith at The Anthem (9/16/23) was fantastic...every song was absolutely mesmerizing and her band was top-notch. The show started pretty much on-time and was just under 2 hours, which is a good length. Smith was in fine voice, and is a great performer. Song selection was great, too.
