About

PATTERSON HOOD IN CONCERT:

The hallmark of Patterson Hood's music career is his stellar songwriting -- he's a natural storyteller who packs his tracks with rich characters, detailed narratives, and vivid imagery. Though he's best known as one-fifth of longtime country rock collective Drive-By Truckers -- revered for their rollicking live shows -- Hood's solo performances are intimate affairs that showcase his impressive acoustic guitar chops. He packs his sets with solo tunes chronicling southern life, as well as Drive-By Truckers favorites like "Steve McQueen" and "Goode's Field Road". Concertgoers will be utterly charmed by his charismatic between-song banter, commanding stage presence, and emotional delivery, which add up to an unforgettable live experience.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Alabama-born singer Patterson Hood started writing songs when he was eight years old, and was jamming in a local rock band by the time he was 14. In college he and his friend Mike Cooley formed the band Adam's House Cat, a short-lived project that won Musician Magazine's Best Unsigned Band competition in 1988 befpre calling it quits. After the group disbanded Hood and Cooley moved to Atlanta, and in 1996 and formed country rock outfit Drive-By Truckers. In 2001 they released the critically acclaimed double-disc album Southern Rock Opera, and it was during that time when Hood began composing darker tracks that didn't mesh with the band's rougher style. He eventually turned the material into his 2004 solo debut album Killers And Stars, and has since released two more solo collections -- 2009's Mudering Oscar (And Other Love Songs) and 2012's Heat Lightning Rumbles In The Distance.

Awesome Performance By A True Legend

by Bart on 12/15/23Ophelia's Electric Soapbox - Denver

Patterson did not disappoint. His mix of DBT classics (and deep cuts) from the entire history of the band as well as his solo material was incredible. His delivery and sound and engagement with the crowd was fantastic, and to come out and meet and greet fans after all these years was really cool. Having seen DBT in large venues all over the country for the past 25 years, to see PH up close and personal in such an intimate setting was really special. A great show, a great night, and really cool venue with good sound.

    Absolute Disppointment

by Dumble on 12/9/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

After seeing Patterson at the same venue a year ago and that show being one of the best live performances I've ever witnessed, I had very high expectations of more of the same. Instead I ended up with F-bombs every other word during the banter between each song. So much that it ruined the show. The stage was set with the opening act who acted like a teen Cobain imitating Murdock from the A Team. 13 year old angst with silly lyrics that reminded me why skateboarding was such a quick fad. Patterson looked comfortable by himself and it's hard to beat the sound of a decent acoustic guitar in the Bijou. But the language was not rock and roll. It was inappropriate, like showing up drunk at your brothers wedding. Awkward indeed. Distraction is what it was. I've supported Patterson and his bands for years. Recruited lots of fans. But this was just awful.

    Nice Intimate Show

by UncleFish on 12/9/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Patterson Hood put on a great, intimate show at the Bijou! His performance was just him and a couple of acoustic guitars. He really connected with the audience, telling stories and giving background on many of the songs he has written over the years. And the song selection consisted of old Drive-By-Truckers songs mixed in with his solo materiel. And, I can't remember any audience (at least lately!) as polite as this one. For most of the songs, you coulda heard a pin drop! Not that they were unresponsive....just wrapped up in the songs. He never really left the stage for the encores! He just didn't seem ready to leave and the audience was not willing to let him go! It was a great evening of great story-songs!

One of the Best American Songwriters

by 47YearCreep on 9/20/12Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Patterson Hood did not disappoint. This was a much more intimate show than the Drive-By Truckers rock & roll show, but they set a wonderful mood and I felt privileged to be a part it. The crowd was small, but completely dedicated and fully invested. Great time had by all!!
