PARLIAMENT-FUNKADELIC IN CONCERT:

Parliament-Funkadelic has influenced generations of funk, R&B, and hip hop musicians with their infectious grooves and psychedelic stage shows. Now the world’s funkiest collective is back on tour to tear the roof off the sucker. Bandleader George Clinton masterfully conducts the vocalists through every harmonious twist as the band delves deeper and deeper into their down and dirty jams. The horns still blow, the drums still bump, and the bass still booms, but new school fans will also appreciate the hip hop and electronica flourishes this freaky fellowship has added to their signature sound. Whenever Parliament-Funkadelic hits the stage they’re sure to get ticket buyers singing along and shaking their booties with p-funk anthems like “Atomic Dog”, “Flash Light”, and “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

George Clinton (born 1941 in Kannapolis, NC) showed an intense interest in music at an early age, forming his first doo wop group, The Parliaments, when he was only 14. He then worked briefly as a staff songwriter for Motown before starting several funk collectives, most notably Parliament and Funkadelic. Both groups began to score hugely influential and successful hits like “Maggot Brain”, “Up for the Down Stroke”, and “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)”. In the early ‘80s the groups consolidated to Parliament-Funkadelic, and they continued to wow fans in performance with outlandish, sci-fi-inspired costumes and stage props as well as dozens of band members on stage at a time. In addition to Clinton, the group has featured contributions from some of the biggest names in funk such as Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Eddie Hazel. The band’s mind-expanding grooves and psychedelic concept albums proved hugely influential, helping them get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The collective continues to soldier on, releasing First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate in 2014 and bringing their futuristic funk to audiences around the world with the same family-style stage shows.

A good show: he’s still got it!, but the sound wasn’t that clear.

    Amazing!

The show was great! I loved the venue, Fox Theatre was very clean and presentable and the staff was polite and kind. Parliament Funkadelic...omg don't even get me started. They put on a SHOW! The show started on time and ended on time, and leaving the venue wasn't a hassle at all. I'd definitely go to the Fox Theatre again and I'm DEFINITELY seeing Parliament Funkadelic again! As long as they continue performing :)

Cash grab, not worth it. Oakland Fox Theater.

by Facts on 11/28/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

George should have retired years ago. Really just phoned it in. No original members playing for a reason. They’re either dead or George owes them money. No soul, no funk. George’s kids and grandkids ran the show and they are not of the same caliber of talent you would anticipate for a P Funk show. I have never seen that many people walk out during a headlining set. If the show comes to your town, don’t get duped.

    Don’t bother

by Em D on 11/28/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

This show was chaotic and disappointing. They played few of the songs anyone actually came to hear. We wanted the funk, but it never came. George spent most of the show sitting on a chair by the drums, I get that he’s 82, but it lacked the showmanship we know him for! The set list included some random covers including Cypress Hill. Some members of the band just seemed to run around the stage for no apparent reason. Save your money and buy a Time Machine.

    Still bringing the FUNK

by Monie G on 11/28/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

George Clinton in his 80s and still bringing the funk. Not the same quality as they were back in the 70s and 80s. Good instrument playing in still bringing the audience to their feet to party.

Not worth the price or experience

    by MusicLover69 on 11/28/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I was deeply disappointed in the performance of George Clinton & PF. I get it, the man is old, but he sat in a chair the whole time and didn’t even sing. He sang along to FAST LIFE for a little bit but all he could even say is “fast life”. George had his back facing the audience more than half the time. Very bad experience for the $400 my boyfriend spent on tickets for the both of us to go. The new PF is just odd too, they turned it into a rap and freestyle show. Didn’t even play most of the hits from PF. No Atomic dog? No we’ve got the funk? What happened? I hope you guys stop touring and ripping people off.

    Some highs, some lows

by Kyle on 11/28/23Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Dumpstaphunk (opener) might have been the best act in terms of musical quality. Very clean sound, good mix, great variety of funk/soul/gospel. Fishbone had great stage presence, but much of the music was a muddy wall of noise. Parliament Funkadelic spent most of their set doing what felt like 20-minute medleys, with the same two-measure bassline, while they forced bits of classic tracks in around solos. There were also some more modern hiphop performances that felt out of sync with the rest of the evening. But we got to see Michael Hampton knock out a stunning Maggot Brain, so I'll call it an overall success.

    The sound was terrible

by Tek on 9/26/23Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

The sound was terrible. The sound tech would miss turning on mics when the singer would change. There were far to much mid highs, maybe the sound tech hearing was starting to go. Far too loud as well.

    Good not Great

by Tomas on 9/21/23Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

New Venue is great, but they haven't seem to figure out the sound yet. Vocals were not balanced and were overshadowed by instruments. Overall, it was painfully loud, and I see a lot of live music. At 82 I am not surprised by Mr. P Funk's engagement (or lack there of), but band was very good.
