Review of Meter Men with Page

by SwellSound on 11/1/12Royale Boston - Boston

As everyone who attended knows, the event was supposed to open the Sinclair.. Guess they were not ready so last minute move to Royale AKA Roxy. I've always loved the room.. Great sight lines from every location and good bar service at the numerous mini bars. The performance was a master class in funk jams with every member putting on a clinic.. Page knows the material very well and really led a lot of Jams into the stratosphere. Leo was both in your face and reserved.. He led a lot with his distinct style but also showed he can still stay in the pocket with the best of them.. I felt as though George was the unofficial band leader as he seemed to be talking to everyone during and between songs..Setting direction etc.. 5 Star performances from everyone and the band as a whole. I would give this entire event 5 stars but for the following: Sound Reinforcement.. Despite the best efforts of the sound engineer, the sound was ok at best in certain parts of the room and terrible in others.. I was on the rail, center mic to start the show. Leo's back line rig was so loud, you could not hear anything but his guitar..Way too loud.. Not cool at all. They had no stage/center fill boxes so you could not hear any vocals or keys at center stage.. Also not cool.. You could barely here George's bass rig over Leo.. Moving out further from the stage and around the room, the mix in the PA was decent but the system is very dated and lacks any decent bass response and clarity by today's standards.. It's a really weak sound system at best. I would not go back to the "Royale" for a live music event as they apparently do not care about sound reinforcement best practices. Many other venues and smaller clubs do. When you consider that this show was supposed to be at the new Sinclair which would have had a state of the art system, it's a huge disappointment.. The fact that Bowery Presents has not even acknowledged to the potential new fans who would have been there opening night, the the impact of this huge error on their part, is also puzzling.. A Mea Culpa is in order..None has been received..

A great night of music, everyone sounded awesome and the combination of members of The Meters with Page worked out great.
