About

Owl City is the musical brainchild of Adam Young, who launched the project in 2007 while living at his parents' home in Owatonna, Minnesota. Troubled by insomnia, Young began spending his evenings in the household basement, where a computer and several instruments provided a diversion from his sleeping patterns. He eventually combined those diversions into a blend of electronica and emo-pop, using little more than his computer and various keyboards to record the material. Songs were uploaded to MySpace upon completion, and Young began attracting a surprising amount of attention on the networking site. Of particular note was "Hello Seattle," a fabricated ode to the Emerald City whose viral popularity earned Young a record contract with Universal Republic.

Ocean Eyes, his first album for the label, was released in 2009, coinciding with the launch of Owl City's first national tour. While on the road, Young watched as "Fireflies" became one of the year's most popular singles, eventually topping the charts in several countries (including the U.S.) and selling more than three million copies. A deluxe edition of the album appeared in 2010, featuring seven bonus tracks as well as the original track list, and Universal Records capitalized on the buzz by also reissuing Maybe I'm Dreaming and Of June, both of which had been self-released several years earlier. An Airplane Carried Me to Bed, an album of acoustic pop songs that predated the Owl City project, followed in 2010. Technically a side project, the album was released under a different moniker, Sky Sailing. Young returned to Owl City in 2011 with All Things Bright and Beautiful, his first collection of new material in years. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi

    didn't quite deliver

by ohdear on 3/24/24The Ritz - Raleigh

Really possibly the worst concert I've been to. The sound balance was awful - all base reverb and couldn't hear the lyrics at all. Such a shame. Also behavior of one large group near us was really disruptive - shouted conversation all the way through, half the group with their backs to the stage and refused to do anything different even when asked nicely. Very disappointed, wish we hadn't bothered. Don't know if the sound issues were a venue or artist problem but I hope for others sake the rest of the tour is not like that.

    Simple, personal, fun

by Michael on 3/24/24The Ritz - Raleigh

I've been a lifelong fan of Owl City and it was a pleasure to see him live. He played about 60% new songs from the Coco Moon album. It was a small standing room venue which suited the style of the show well. The act was mostly just him with a shadowed supporting cast. He played all kinds of instruments and gave a great "one man band"impression. Highly recommend for any old fab of his, but I recommend being familiar with the new album since he focuses on that music.

Great experience! Even in general admission you can see clearly the musician.

    Amazing show!!!

    by Karebear20 on 3/24/24The Ritz - Raleigh

This show was everything!!! My 17 year old self and my current day 30 year old self were simultaneously happy and my husband and I had such a fun time!! Owl City never fails to put on an amazing show. We decided to upgrade our tickets at the venue and the upgrade at The Ritz was 100% worth it. It was an unforgettable night and my heart is still full from this experience. Definitely recommend Owl City and you do not want to miss this tour if you can make it!!

    Too much bass

by JC on 3/24/24The Ritz - Raleigh

I love concerts and am used to loud speakers, but this was something else. The bass was way too intense, drowning out most other instruments and even Adam’s vocals at times. I paid to hear his artistry and vocals, not get my face melted off with bass. Also, it was not clear anywhere what the show start time was. I was surprised to have to wait a full hour after the time on my ticket to hear the opening act.

    Best Day Of My Life

    by Erika on 12/16/23

I’ve loved Owl City ever since I was a small girl, my first tattoo is Owl City themed. My fiancé and I got to see him at Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville and I had the best time there. Being able to see him perform and just have fun on stage was the best. Thank you so much Adam Young!!

    Very cool but very cheesy

    by Fireflies on 11/2/23

It was so cool to see Adam perform live. He is so talented, but I had to admit a lot of his songs are so cheesy.

    An amazing and worthwhile experience

by Gabe T on 11/2/23Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

I saw Owl City with my wife and a friend of ours in Minneapolis at the Uptown Theater. The establishment was good and the workers were very kind and welcoming. Before the concert started they were playing songs of Adam Young’s other work ‘Scores,’ which were pretty soothing. Augustana was the opener for Owl City. While he wasn’t really my style, but he was a great performer and we got to meet him afterwards. Which was cool and he is a very wholesome and enthusiastic man (who looks younger than he his). He even signed a poster and made it out to a friend of mine, without me even asking. He’s a joy, I pray life treats him well! Now to Owl City himself. Wow, what a concert! I’ve been to a few concerts, but Owl City easily takes the cake! His performance felt more personal than other concerts I’ve been to, rather than saying cheesy sentiments between songs, he was earnest and it was easy to see that he was just happy to be there and was being himself. For someone who is more shy and introverted during interviews, Adam Young brought so much energy and enthusiasm to his performance. I was awestruck seeing him bounce around the stage like a breeze on fire. Each song he played of his sounded different than any recording of it, it sounded full of so much life and I loved every second of it! Owl City alternated between his new album ‘Coco Moon’ and his other works. While Coco Moon has grown on me, I don’t think it’s his best album, but hearing it in concert was two steps up and I love it! The lights during the show were great and complemented the performance without distracting from it. The speakers weren’t overwhelmingly loud, granted we weren’t in the mosh pit. The people there were also great and really chill. As someone from middle of nowhere North Dakota, going to the Twin Cities is always a weird experience. But the concert crowd was different. I remember seeing everyone lined up around the block for the concert, and I commented, “You can tell that this is an Owl City because this is the most normal looking group of Twin Cities people I’ve ever seen.” Everyone there seemed really happy to be there and the people were very friendly! Overall, nothing short of amazing! The music was better than anything recording you can find. From start to end, everything was spectacular, the music, lights, performance, setting, people, all of it was spectacular! My experience seeing Owl City in concert for the first time (and hopefully not the last) was nothing less than euphoric! I high recommend it and I’m so happy and grateful I went!

    A good concert

    by RJ on 11/2/23

Puchased the tickets for my daughter and I. Venue was loud but seems to me people had fun. Wish I didn’t have to stand so long =( but I knew coming in that would be the case. A few of his popular songs I assumed were under contract (i.e. Disney) so I guess he couldn’t sing them. Overall, we had fun.
