Why is it that when I go see a show at a small venue or club, it's almost always the opening act that blows me away??? This is how I discovered One Eskimo several months back, as an opening act for Gomez. I liked them enough to go see them as a headliner and wasn't nearly as impressed. They have clearly matured (grown tired?) in the six months since I saw them last. The drummer was the highlight as he was before. He has clearly invested in new technology and a fancy new cymbal array. One Eskimo should be super thankful they have him. They played 45 minutes and cut several songs down from their album length destroying at least one great track ('Amazing') which runs 4:45 on the CD. They did it in about one minute.
As to the opening act, John Common and Blinding Flashes of Light... great, simply great. A mellow sound, a great look and talent, talent, talent all over the stage. Sometimes when you see a great band for the first time you are disappointed by their CD and sometimes its the other way around. I gotta say, I bought two of their 3 CDs at the show and was REALLY impressed not only by the musicality of the CDs but also the very high recording standards they had. I have heard WAY LESS professional recordings from major label acts. If these guys are in your area, GO SEE THEM! You won't be disappointed.
