About

Once on This Island on Tour

The Tony Award–winning revival of Once on This Island reimagines Romeo and Juliet as star-crossed lovers from different classes cohabiting on a lush tropical isle. After premiering on Broadway in 1990, where it was nominated for eight Tony Awards, this one-act musical — with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty — was reborn at the Circle in the Square Theatre in 2017 under the direction of Michael Arden and with choreography by Camille A. Brown. It won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical the following year. The revival's immersive staging was preserved when the production went on tour in 2019. An overturned boat juts up from a sandbagged pool of water, and ensemble members go about their lives amid audience members seated onstage. The feeling of a real community damaged by a natural disaster adds a contemporary air to this lovingly crafted evening.

Once on This Island Background

A young French Antillean's love for the rich boy from the other side of her island sets cosmic forces in motion in this musical adaptation of Rosa Guy's 1985 novel, My Love, My Love: or The Peasant Girl. The village's working-class population slowly acquires the colorful regalia and noble bearing of Afro-Caribbean gods, reflecting the enamored couple's all-consuming passion. Stephen Flaherty's music offers a rich pastiche of calypso, beguine and African tribal dance. In their gender and racial fluidity, Once on This Island's characters offer lessons in both tolerance and magnificence.

In the national touring version, Courtnee Carter continues in the lead role of Ti Moune, which she performed on Broadway. Tyler Hardwick, likewise held over from the Broadway revival, plays Daniel Beauxhomme, the light-skinned rich boy who steals her heart. "It would be hard to imagine a cast more appealing, more ideal for Once on This Island than the ensemble brought together under [Michael] Arden's focused direction," raved Broadway World of this magical touring production.

    Terrible acoustics

    by T4fritts on 3/10/20ASU Gammage - Tempe

The acoustics at the ASU Gammage performance were so terrible that during the first few songs, you could make out only a few words. While the theater is partly to blame, this was much worse than most performances there. Talented performers and cool vibe, but cannot recommend. Given the coronavirus risk and expense - skip this one.

    Awful sound quality

by LinBin on 3/9/20ASU Gammage - Tempe

I'm not sure why, but the acoustics at ASU's Gammage Theater often leave a lot to be desired and this performance was one of the worst in that regard. If I understood 25% of the words, spoken or sung it would be a lot. After the show, I heard at least six other patrons who were all sitting in other locations say the same thing. It's so unfortunate, as the voices and energy of the cast members as well as the set were great, but I lost interest when I couldn't follow the story.

Fun, energetic intense music, beautiful legend.

by MM on 3/6/20ASU Gammage - Tempe

You have to pay attention closely, and listen to all the lyrics, to follow the story. Young children would have a hard time following. Great story from an old legend. Music is powerful, story is emotional, but the moral is high in the star, Timun. Fun and exciting too, with a lot of African style dancing, and makes you want to dance along!

The cast was excellent! The little girl in the tree had an excellent voice. I really enjoyed the little girl transition into a young lady. The ending was sad to me

    Once on This Island

    by T. K. on 12/11/19Hershey Theatre - Hershey

The cast and crew were fantastic. It was amazing to see how they used the stage to help convey the various scenes, without a lot of room. The singing was fabulous, and we could easily hear everything from the balcony at Hershey Theater. The cast is extremely friendly, not just signing autographs, but having conversations with my 8 year old grandson. Couldn't have had a better all around experience.
