    Noise is not music

by DisappointedandAnnoyed on 2/22/11Capitol Theatre - Columbus

I have a 4 year Bachelors Degree in Music & Theater and I have performed and watched hundreds of performances, however this "show" was the worst I have ever seen. There were a couple entertaining moments in the first half (drums and dancer with a ring of fire) but we left at intermission because having to watch someone play a cactus and a pile of dry leaves is ridiculous. The dancers were not entertaining and rather annoying. I feel that it is the duty of the performers to entertain the audience not challenge our level of tolerance. The art and design team did display nice visual effects on the screen. I cannot believe I purchased tickets for this event.

We have attended all but one of the Drums Downtown performances and this was the best by far! Keep the three departments involved - percussion, dance and graphics. They all enhance the presentation. Glad to see that the tap dancing was included again this year. Thanks for a great performance!!!!

OSU Drums Downtown VIII - worthwhile

by Ginnylitz on 2/20/11Capitol Theatre - Columbus

My husband, grandson (6-years old) and I attended the Friday evening performance. There was much we enjoyed like the innovative "instruments" of percussion (cactus, water, clay pots, vacuum, lighters & flames, etc). And we REALLY enjoyed the finale with its tummy-rumbling bass drums, upbeat, and entertaining hip-hop and tap dancers. If asked how I would change next year's performance? (1)Decrease the length of abstract numbers like the cactus playing, (2)mix up the program with alternating slow/fast, abstract/traditional acts, and (3) less interpretive/modern dancing. In fact, less dancing, period -- it detracted from the percussion performances in some instances. Overall it was definitely worth the time and money, and such a joy to be surrounded by youth and talent and creativity. My thanks to the disciplined and dedicated students who made the performance what it was. Count us in for 2012!

    OSU Percussion Drums Downtown VIII

Absolutely awesome event! The multimedia experience between the music, dance, and images was like nothing I have ever seen before. No marching band music here!

    Drums Downtown: another great performance

by BirdNerd on 2/20/11Capitol Theatre - Columbus

I went to the performance last year and loved it. This year's performance was amazing as well. The way all of the pieces worked around the "Elements" theme was really well done. I'll definitely go to next year's event!
