Nile Rodgers in Concert

You may not know the name Nile Rodgers, but you certainly know his music. One of the architects of funk and disco, Rodgers is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer who crafted some of the most iconic songs of the last 40 years — dance-floor classics by Diana Ross, David Bowie, Duran Duran, INXS, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and the B-52s.

His own band, Chic, recorded the hit single "Good Times" in 1979, which provided the bassline for the first mainstream hip-hop hit, Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," as well as Queen's smash "Another One Bites the Dust" and, decades later, Daft Punk's breakout single "Around the World."

In 2014, Rodgers won three Grammys for his contribution to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, which spawned the platinum single "Get Lucky." All told, the recordings he's contributed to have sold more than 500 million albums and 75 million singles worldwide. It's a pop-music legacy so dizzying that even the experts have a hard time summarizing it. In 2014, Rolling Stone wrote, "the full scope of Nile Rodgers' career is hard to fathom."

Rodgers was born into the bohemian underground of Manhattan's Lower East Side in 1952. He never knew much about his father other than that he was a traveling musician who died young. His mother remarried a doctor with connections to New York's avant-garde art scene, and by the time he was a teenager Rodgers was already familiar with drugs and alcohol.

Music kept him on a professional path, and he teamed up with Bernard Edwards and formed Chic in 1977. The band's first two albums spawned several landmarks of disco-funk, bringing them deeper into the world of soul, R&B, funk, and disco. Through the 1980s and ‘90s, Chic toured with a who's-who of those styles while Rodgers applied his prescient taste and considerable talents to pop-music production of every variety. After a near-death episode in 1994, he quit drugs and alcohol and watched his career achieve even greater heights.

Rodgers' recent team-ups with Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, and Lady Gaga have kept him at the forefront of popular music — even if he stays mostly in the background. In 2018, he brought a newly revamped Chic to Coachella, complete with band uniforms, backup singers, and choreographed dance moves, connecting to a whole new generation of fans. His live shows span the entirety of his five-decade-long career, a sweat-drenched, crowd-pleasing testament to one of pop's most towering talents.

Nile Rodgers Was Great; Dolly was a letdown

by C. on 11/11/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

It was fairly disappointing for the headliner of the benefit performance to play two songs and then leave the stage. Nile Rodgers and his band were absolutely wonderful, but for the hefty ticket price, it would've been nice to get more than two Dolly songs.

    False advertising

by N. n. on 11/8/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

This really shouldn’t have been labeled as a Dolly Parton show. It was a Nile Rodgers show with special guest and she only sang two songs.... very disappointing for the ticket price!

    Disappointing

by JK on 11/8/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

Unfortunately, this show left a lot to be desired. While Dolly Parton rocked the stage, her set lasted a mere 15 minutes. I understand that she was not feeling up to a longer set but tickets were a lot of money and the concert was advertised as a Dolly Parton show. Fans were let it, we waited for almost 45 minutes and then heard 2.5 songs. Nile Rogers continued but, with Dolly Parton as the headliner, most people were there to see her. The show was a waste of money, falsely advertised and extremely disappointing.

    Disclaimer needed

by C. on 11/8/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

The event was billed as a concert with Dolly Parton. However, she sang two songs and left. If that was the plan, that needed to be stated upfront. Having said that, Nile Rodgers & Chic put on a fantastic show. Once Folly left, I didn't plan to stay, but I stayed for the whole show.

Was made to think this was a Dolly Parton concert.

by D on 11/8/19Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New York

We were made to think this was a Dolly Parton concert when booking. The show details were hazy at best, and evolved further from mentioning Dolly and further towards Nile Rodgers. Rodgers and CHIC put on a hell of a show. But I'd have paid $30 for that show. I paid $150 to see Dolly Parton, and she sang two songs, not including Jolene. I will still need to see Dolly Parton in my life, which I guess means it will cost me $150 + 150 = $300 just for one real show, in the end.

    Chic Forever

by WigglyPoo on 5/3/18Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Very consistent with shows recently posted on You Tube. Great array of hits. Technical difficulties with Niles' amp early on delayed the show a little, but no worries.

THIS BAND IS TOO FUNKIN' GOOD!

by TippiCot on 4/22/18Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Good Times! The Nile Rogers and Chic show is incredible. Not only did they play all of the greatest hits that CHIC are famous for, but they also played a wide selection of songs that Nile wrote and/or played on. Some of these hits include Madona's Like a Virgin, Bowie's Let's Dance, Daft Punk Get Lucky, Diana Ross Upside down (which is also the music track for "Mo Money" by Biggie, etc., etc. and the band is a collection of the BEST musicians on the planet. If you want to go to a performance that makes you MOVE, try to catch this show!

Nile played all the Chic classics plus songs that he’s produced. The English Beat were great too.

he needed more time on stage

by Maidenman on 6/25/14Verizon Theater - Grand Prairie

Last Thursday evening I took in a show billed as “The Night of Proms”. The nice 2 level theater with great sound and sight lines was almost at the 6000 capacity thanks to many comp’d tickets and generous ½ price deals leading up to the show. I, like many, got my tickets for free. I didn’t really have a grasp of what the evening was to entail otherwise I might have passed on the show even though it was “free”. I thought it was being advertised as Night of Proms because of the four groups in the line-up: The Pointer Sisters, Nile Rodgers, Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. You know, older groups, maybe “prom” type music in the 70’s and 80’s. Wow, was I WRONG! I had heard there was an orchestra but it still didn’t click. Later I would find out that Night of Proms is an Orchestra, Choir and Opera show that has been in Europe for some time and they will “feature” rock and pop acts. This is its first time to America. I think it originated in Belgium. The show was almost 4 hours long about and only about an hour of it were the four acts I went there to see. Basically it was classical music and some opera for 30 minutes then you got 15 minutes of one of the rock/pop artist. Sure everything sounded good, a great light show, they tried to incorporate some humor with the opera but overall IT WAS A BREAT DOWN! There was a “host” sort of a Lawrence Welk kind a guy who talked between most of the songs. The classical music they was more well know sopngs. I had heard much of it before, and they played whatever the song is that Iron Maiden used as the intro on the Brave New World tour. That was cool. However if it hadn’t been for that fact that I had never seen any of the 4 acts and it was a 40 minute from my home drive I would left!! The best part of the evening was seeing McDonald and Loggins duet on “This is it” and “What a fool believes”, I don’t how often you get you to see that. When the Pointer Sisters hit the stage(40 minutes into the show) they exploded with some much needed energy. They looked good and sounded good. 30-40 minutes later Kenny Loggins played. This guy is still stick thin and very youthful despite being in his 60’s. I didn’t know his 1st song; he did a lame sing a long on the 2nd song. His last 3 songs were good. At some point in the 2nd Act Nile Rodgers finally played. I love all his old disco and funk music, but he only got to play 3 songs. He did get the place on its feet. There was some guy that wrote and played for Tina Turner he did a few songs even a good version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Then another 30-40 minutes went by and Michael McDonald played. He was really over weight and bloated. He still has that distinctive voice but he seemed to be struggling in the short time he was on stage. At the end everyone came out on stage and played “We are family”. Very quality performers but it just wasn’t my thing. Of course many shows might have been a let-down after seeing Boston the night before. Night of Proms Set list Pointer Sisters: Fire I’m so exited Neutron dance Jump (for my love) Kenny Loggins: Conviction of the heart Celebrate me home This is it Danger zone Footloose Nile Rodgers: I want your love Le Freak Good times Michel McDonald: Yah mo b there Sweet freedom On my own What a fool believes I keep forgettin’ every time you’re near
