New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the "Original Six" NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs — including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Nine players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, and Mike Richter. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Loved the game, what an experience. Madison Square Garden is the best in the world and the New York Rangers were awesome. Loved the atmosphere, the team, the fans, everything. Would love to be able to go to every hockey game. Worth every cent!

    Awesome experience and great game

by Steve on 3/14/24Madison Square Garden - New York

Had an almost perfect experience at the garden. Seats were great and the game was excellent. Crew were awesome and made for a pleasant experience. The only negatives for me were that in the 400 section there weren’t any cup holders for our drinks. Also, the men’s room near section 415 isn’t big enough. The line was super long and there was only one stall and one urinal. Even with these few minor negatives, I will definitely be back in the future for another rangers game.

    I love the Rangers

by Debbie on 3/13/24Madison Square Garden - New York

I had a slight problem getting my ticket to appear on my phone, but the Ticketmaster agent helped me. It worked perfectly at MSG. The MSG staff members were all friendly and helpful. The Rangers won the game, and an extra highlight was that I met John Brancy, the national anthem singer!

Great Night at MSG with the Rangers

by LM on 3/7/24Madison Square Garden - New York

MSG certainly knows how to put on a show. We attended the Rangers game against the Panthers and the atmosphere was electric in building. They game was amazing to watch between two top teams in the league, the music, the light show, the celebrities, and the contests they run during the game make it a very interactive fun experience for everyone and the family. We loved the whole experience and look forward to attend future games at MSG.

    Noise, noise, noise

by LAX Tom on 3/7/24Madison Square Garden - New York

Rangers game experience will always be mid as long as they insist on bombarding our eardrums with ridiculously loud "music"during every break in the action. It's annoying and totally unnecessary. The noise they make trying to encourage the crowd to "make some noise"is so loud you can't even hear the crowd, so what even is the point? Has anyone ever complained because the music at the hockey game they attended wasn't loud enough? Why does every hockey venue do this?

Awesome to see NHL as its best

by Stu on 3/7/24Madison Square Garden - New York

I'm from Finland and it has been a long time dream of my to see NHL live. What better way to do it than in MSG. I did sit next to awesome Rangers fans (we had nice moments and talks) and I saw fellow country men both in a rink and stand. Night to remember...
