by AllorNothing on 6/22/22St. George Theatre - Staten IslandI thought it was going to be a Father's Day Concert but I was mistaken . It was a Juneteenth Concert. I learned about Nigerian based tradition of “libations” and blessed our ancestors who had gone before . I enjoyed the jazz group from Susan Wagner High School . The girl singer was incredible .This was the best part of the day for me .
II did not care for the
Wynton Marsalis piece . It was atonal and very long . People were walking out
We waited for the Sing-a-Long. But no one sang along , because although the words were written in the program, without lights ,we could not read the words .
I think the Philharmonic should have been more forthcoming and told us what the focus of their presentation was going to be . Perhaps there would have been a more diverse audience to enjoy the presentation on Juneteeth .
I brought friends with me who felt the same way . I am grateful for all the years that the Philharmonic has come to Staten Island , I appreciated the planning and work that went into this presentation .
It just was not what I expected .
