New Orleans Pelicans History

The New Orleans Pelicans franchise joined the NBA in 1988 in Charlotte, North Carolina as the Hornets. They struggled until the early 1990s, when in a three-year span they assembled the young trio of Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill. With Glen Rice added to the mix, they made four playoff appearances in the 1990s, and started another successful stretch in the 1999–00 season fueled by guard Baron Davis. But after an unsuccessful bid to get a new arena, the team moved to New Orleans in 2002.

The Hornets made the playoffs each of their first two years in New Orleans, but after the third year they were forced to relocate to Oklahoma City for two seasons due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Upon returning in 2007–08, they finished 56-26 to win the Southwest Division, led by the trio of Chris Paul, David West and Tyson Chandler. In the playoffs, they beat the Dallas Mavericks in the first round before falling to the San Antonio Spurs in a seven-game conference semifinal.

Under new ownership (New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson purchased the Hornets in 2012), the team changed their name to the Pelicans. This new era was initially spearheaded by No. 1 Draft pick Anthony Davis, joined later by All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, and followed by the pairing of 2019 first overall draft pick Zion Williamson and 2020 Most Improved Player Brandon Ingram.

    Awesome experience!!!

by Brittany W on 10/15/23Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

Overall it was a great experience! Well thought out. All of the attendants and personnel were super nice and helpful. I had floor seats and was able to experience the food and drinks. It was truly an experience, the salads, chicken, rice and beans among the other options were so good and filling! The atmosphere from the games to the band and everything in between really made this a truly unforgettable experience!

    Severely restricted view

by Ioan Coedydwyrain on 10/15/23Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

I’m surprised Ticketmaster sent me an email to review this event! Once again you brazenly sold seats at this venue that have a restricted view. They were not listed as such.

    My experience was awful.

by Mrs. H on 10/17/22Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

I ordered 3 seats that suppose to start on a end row. When we arrived, the workers had a problem finding our seats due to the fact that our end row seats were actually in the middle of a row. Some how there was not a opening left for row M in section 102.

The parking situation stinks in downtown Birmingham

by Dave O on 10/17/22Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

The parking and traffic around venues in Birmingham is absolutely horrible. It took us over 45 minutes just to find an illegal parking spot. We won’t be attending anymore events downtown until they figure this out. Poor long term planning by the city council.

Wished the teams would have had merchandise to buy.

    Fun Game!

by Shania on 10/17/22Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

The game was fun every minute of it. Had a great view. Seats had little leg room especially for the price of them. Halftime performers were good but could’ve had another 2-3 more kinda got dull at one point. Trey Young didn’t play Zion didn’t play Collins didn’t play but the game was still fun to watch especially when the Pelicans came back in the 3rd Quarter.

    Good experience

by c. S. on 10/17/22Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

The seats were not a good view for our group. We had to sit behind a rail that was blocking our view during the entire game. When we purchase the seats, there was nothing noted on the seating map about a rail. This was not good seating at all.

    NBA in Bama

by EDolla on 10/17/22Legacy Arena at The BJCC - Birmingham

I am so glad the NBA and the Legacy arena have gotten together. Everyone can’t travel to Atlanta, Memphis or NO to enjoy an NBA game. Thank you for bringing it closer to home. The arena is GORGEOUS and the staff was fantastic.
