About

Born in Te Awamutu, New Zealand in 1958, singer and songwriter Neil Finn is most associated with being a member of the band Spit Enz and as the founder and frontman of Crowded House. With numerous hits over the course of his career, Finn is one of the most successful musicians to have hailed from New Zealand.

Neil Finn learnt to play the piano at a fairly young age and, inspired by the likes of Neil Young and David Bowie, his interest in music grew substantially in the early ‘70s. Neil's elder brother Tim was one of the chief members of Split Enz, who were popular in Australia at the time, and in 1977 he asked Neil to join the band. The younger Finn brother soon became an important member of the group and wrote their biggest-selling hit “I Got You,” which broke Split Enz internationally.

After Split Enz broke up in 1985, Neil Finn went on to form Crowded House. With Finn as the main creative force, Crowded House enjoyed huge international success with hits such as “Don't Dream It's Over,” “Weather with You” and “Fall at Your Feet.” In 1996, the album Recurring Dream: The Very Best of Crowded House, topped the UK album charts. In that same year, Finn decided to dissolve the band in order to concentrate on a solo career. Crowded House would eventually reform in 2006 and embarked on lengthy world tours in both 2007 and 2010 to promote new albums.

In addition to two albums recorded with his brother Tim under the name The Finn Brothers, Neil Finn has enjoyed much success as a solo artist with albums such as Try Whistling This and One Nil. The live releases The Sun Came Out and 7 Worlds Collide featured guest appearances from a number of artists, including the likes of Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Philip Selway from Radiohead. In 1998, Finn recorded a cover of the song “I Can See Clearly Now” for the hit animated film Antz. In 2012, Neil Finn contributed to the soundtrack of the smash hit film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, writing and performing the track “Song of the Lonely Mountain,” which played over the film's closing credits.

Neil Finn is a master tunesmith

by MPMcS on 4/17/14Town Hall - New York

I had the great pleasure of seeing Neil Finn on the Dizzy Heights Tour at Town Hall in New York earlier this month. After enduring with great calm and good nature some significant technical difficulties at the beginning of the show, he displayed once again why he is one of my favorite live performers. The new material benefits greatly from live performance and he was able to mine his old material to include songs from most of his recordings and musical incarnations. Then in his second encore his two sons and Sharon joined him onstage for another 6 or more tunes! All while skyping the encore to "Nana" in New Zealand on a laptop perched on one of the speakers. The whole audience bid her adieu when it was done. Neil seemed reluctant to leave the stage. And I wished it could have gone on forever. Thank you to Neil and family and band-mates for an incredible night of music. Beyond memorable.

Great concert and a great new album

by NightRelic on 4/14/14Shubert Theater - New Haven

We got a nice cross section of Neil's career, everything from Split Enz (I Got You and a couple of others) to Crowded House (Don't Dream Its Over and a few others) to some of my favorites from his solo album, Try Whistling This like Souvenir and She Will Have Her Way. Neil played a couple of acoustic versions with his son Elroy also on guitar. I'd already purchased Dizzy Heights on vinyl, so I knew some of the songs, like the title track, Impressions, Pony Ride and Flying In The Face Of Love. If you've ever wanted to see Neil, this is the tour to finally do it. The new album is as good as anything he's ever done. The band is tight. He has his wife and son in the band. Neil jokes around, enters walking across the piano and does some slides across it on his shoulder when he's switching back to guitar. This was one of the better shows I've seen in a while. Favorite moment: When Neil and company came back for the encore, a bunch of people toward the front started yelling out requests. Apparently they all weren't hits. He said he'd intended playing a bunch of hits, but decided to poll the audience to see what we wanted. There was a louder cheer for "not hits" so he said he'd play Pony Ride instead from the new album, which is one of my favorites off it. What a treat! They had vinyl copies of Dizzy Heights and the warm up band's album available at the swag table. They were only $20, same as on line. The cd was $15 and the vinyl comes with a download card. A no brainer here. Vinyl really is back!

    Neil Finn

by Dickrichie46 on 4/13/14Shubert Theater - New Haven

Neil Finn is an amazing singer/songwriter. The show was a great mix of Split Enz, Crowded House and solo material. He has a great young band and a unbelievable back up singer. Neil is at home on the stage and his banter and stage antics made the night a memorable one. Great stage set and lighting too! Neil doesn't get to North America that offend so go and see him if he's in your neck of the woods. A must see show.

    Neil Finn Dizzy Heights Tour

by Anonymous on 4/13/14Shubert Theater - New Haven

Awesome Concert!!! I don't understand why Neil Finn is not more popular here in the States? I went to the concert wanting to hear some classic CH songs, but I was very much into his new album Dizzy Heights and his duets with his son Elroy.

    Great show - Very Musiferous

by Anonymous on 4/13/14Shubert Theater - New Haven

Great show - Neil played for 2 1/2 hours straight. Played a fantastic mix of Split Enz, Crowded House, Finn Brothers, Pajama Club, and of course his solo work including the new album... Everything you could imagine and still a few surprises as well. A Silent House duo with his son was a highlight for me. Just fantastic! Fall at Your Feet, and Four Seasons were equally done well, with a lot of crowd participation, and Don't Dream It's Over on piano was nicely done too. I especially liked the quieter stuff on the piano, and guitar. Made the show intimate. But the band also really rocked out on a bunch of classics. On Locked Out the music played a bit too loud, but overall everything was masterful - just great. Definitely go and see this show. And, don't wait too long to come back again Neil!!
