    Calpurnia is no comedy

by Ottawa 2013 on 5/8/22National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

"Calpurnia" is a good play. I have two points to make. One, it is no comedy, contrary to what is what advertised as. It does bring up all the absurdity of the woke culture, but it is not funny. Rather, we saw a rather accurate depiction of the sad reality we all live in. Even the most extreme scenes did not feel stretched. All that could happen. My second point is that the play is not even about race. It is a story of ungratefulness, on many levels. The cast seemed talented and I wish them success in their future performances. The nanny's very short lines in the second half were spoken with great emotion and moved me to tears. I think she was the best actress in the show.

Fun Night of Live Theater - brings backs old memories

by Lockwood on 2/12/20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Overall, I enjoyed the show and I am glad I chose to go see it. The play was a creative and imaginative experience; inspired by both the original novel and the 1980s film. How the creators skillfully use incredible lighting effects the the costumes/puppets was probably the hi-lite of the show. Artax the horse, when running in slow motion is probably one of the most beautiful things to watch on the stage. The play was intended for younger demographic, although it does cover depression and loneliness in its different forms, using “the nothing” as a metaphor. I was slightly disappointed with the second act storyline with the villains - essentially two scenes of dialogue that didn’t really go anywhere. And the final ending with the child-like empress felt a little rushed and anti-climatic in comparison to both the film/novel versions. Still, it was fun to see the world of Fantastica and the magic of live theater.

    Brings back memories

by Elizabeth WS on 2/4/20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The live performance was very well done. I really enjoyed the creativity that went into production. It brought back the memories I have as a young girl, watching the film over and over again. I actually never knew there was a book, which the live performance is based on. Overall I enjoyed myself. The theme song is a little too punk for my liking, but you could say I’m biased since I still have the movie’s theme song stuck in my head. Oh! And our $30 seats (balcony, front row) were absolutely perfect.

    Interesting Play

by Joe on 9/17/19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was an interesting play. Very creatively done. Although it was over 3 hours long, it didn't actually feel like you'd been sitting as long as you had. Certainly, it could have been cut in places. Some scenes felt extraneous - with no added value. I would have liked to have seen more culture woven into the story, rather than just a dance and song at the end of each half. The three women in bright costumes felt out of place. We were trying to sort out what they represented, why they moved around the way they did and why they were dressed as they were. It felt disjointed with respect to them. I loved the wording towards the end. It felt very poetic and moving. Fabulous actors.

Great, and not just for Canadians!

by ChicagoAreaFan on 10/6/17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Visited Ottawa to celebrate Canada's 150th, and found online mention of this new play. Thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns-- and the singing! Highly recommend as informative and FUN!

    King Lear was strange

by Declan22 on 6/12/12National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The decision to perform King Lear as an all native production was a mixed blessing. Some of the actors were very skilled and delivered memorable performances. The native dress while strange did not detract from the performance. A few of the minor actors were having a hard time with the dialogue and appeared to be confused as to where to put the emphasis in a sentence. Overall it was a fine evening.

    Off The Wall

by BugsBunny914 on 3/23/12National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The puppeteer was fabulous. His ability to do all the voices was amazing. The story was a bit off the wall.

2 Pianos 4 Hands was hilarious

by Jockstheman on 1/22/12National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

For anyone who has ever taken music lessons this was a definite "trip down memory lane" but with laughter this time. And if you never took lessons, you can enjoy it anyway. Just hilarious!
