What is My Little Pony?
The first line of My Little Pony dolls was released by Hasbro in the early '80s, introducing children to a magical world of brightly colored wee horsies decked out in equally vibrant manes and special insignias on their bodies. Within a few years, My Little Pony had evolved into a blockbuster franchise cranking out animated specials, a TV series and feature-length films. The brand underwent a couple of reboots before achieving its greatest successes in the 21st century, thanks to the 2010 debut of the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic cartoon series. This pop-culture–savvy iteration of the MLP universe proved to be a big hit among not only the expected audience of young girls but also, surprisingly, a cult audience of adult males who proudly call themselves "bronies." (The show's creator, Lauren Faust, had previously worked on The Powerpuff Girls, another cartoon that appealed to a hip older audience.) This intense fandom has spawned a dense online ecosystem of blogs, memes, message boards and YouTube video mash-ups, as well as an annual convention, BronyCon, that attracted crowds in the thousands. And while My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic wrapped up after nine seasons in 2019, the adventures in Equestria continue onstage with the My Little Pony Live musical revue.
