Symphoria the best kept secret in town

by DeDe8 on 5/20/13The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater - Syracuse

I always enjoy going to the symphony concerts. I enjoy the pop shows. The Gershwin show was great and the broadway show was very entertaining. The really should have more pop theater. The orchestra is excellent , the singers good and the chorus was great. The combination of tunes was enjoyable. The tunes were mixed, both old and currents songs. From Les Miz to Sound of Music. The only criticism and I have noticed this at a lot of shows at the Civic center is the acoustics. At times I could hear the singers but I couldn't understand what they were sayiing which took away from my enjoyment. When the song from Ragtime was sung I could not understand a single word. The orchestra was too loud and the singers attempted to be louder then the band and it turned out to be a shouting match between the singers and the band. I was in the balcony and maybe that was the cause of the distortion. Unfortunately, the theater was empty and I hope the poor attendance will not continue because I do enjoy the concerts. I do not enjoy classical music hopefully the attendance is better during the classical shows . I would hate to see the symphony close down again. Last thought--i would have njoyed a different song from Chorus Line.

Symphoria has not lost its edge

by Classicwish on 5/13/13The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater - Syracuse

The blessing that so many of the players from the old SSO organization are still living and playing in Central New York was clearly evident in the power and feeling of their music making on Saturday evening at Crouse Hinds Theatre. Maestro Mechetti and the new Symphoria clicked as in Days of Yore as they hosted Jon Parker Kimura in a fantastic display of piano power and ensemble in the first half of the concert. An solo encore by Mr. Kimura from Stravinsky's Petruschka that he has just recorded for solo piano was a special treat for the audience. In the second half of the concert Mechetti and Symphoria were completely on their game bringing Resphigi's Pines of Rome to completely fully beauty and volume in the hall, proving that live music will always trump recordings. What a wonderful night. Thank goodness first class live symphonic music is once again available in Syracuse, New York where it had resided for so many years.

    Gershwin Event was very good.

by CatoGirl46 on 2/24/13The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater - Syracuse

Sylvia McNair sounds better than ever and the young dancer was very good and fun. Kevin Cole is accomplished at Gershwin style piano renditions, so the whole package was good. The least successful feature was the Multi-media that accompanied the program - it was very unimaginative and dull, which is too bad. A better multi-media package could make this a top-notch program that coud rate an amazing!

This was the best Holiday Pops performance in memory! An absolutely wonderful event for my family. It is fantastic that Central New York has its symphony back on stage!!! I will return to enjoy the rest of its season.

Musical Associates of Central NY Holiday Symphonic

by Andrea45 on 12/16/12The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater - Syracuse

I heard about the Holiday Spectacular from my daughters who are students of one of the percussionists. We thought it was absolutely amazing and were so glad that we were able to attend. We were also there to hear the percussionist's niece who was unbelievable. What a voice! I would highly recommend this concert to anyone who has not seen it and hope that we can see it again next year
