About

Mumu Fresh in Concert

When she was 19, Maimouna "Mumu Fresh" Youssef went on her first world tour as a singer for The Roots, and it sparked an international performance narrative that cannot be separated from who she is as an artist today. She's no stranger to the world's big stages, having performed at Red Rocks in Denver, Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and marquee festivals like Montreux and Cape Town International.

Her jazzy R&B and hip-hop stylings, infused with spoken word and live instrumentation, deliver a pointed reflection of strength and harmony, with globally minded lyrics that shed light on powerful black femininity and positivity prevailing above all. "Genres are just tools in my belt to evoke varied emotions, spark a lightning bolt inside of a mind and heart; connect with God and inspire my listeners to dig deeper and vibrate higher," she told Griots Republic.

Mumu Fresh looks to tell the story of the places she's been by wearing multicultural clothing and jewelry while performing, often paying homage to her African and Native American roots. She's been a supporting vocalist on tour for Zap Mama, The Roots, and most recently, Common and his supergroup August Greene.

Mumu Fresh Background

One of 14 children, Maimouna Youssef was born in Baltimore and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. A graduate of D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, she's an accomplished singer, emcee, writer, workshop facilitator, and mentor, as well as decorated local activist.

She has six releases under her belt, including 2011's debut LP The Blooming and 2017's Vintage Babies, featuring the charting single, "Shine Your Light," produced by DJ Dummy. She has collaborated with DJ Jazzy Jeff and producer 9th Wonder, and received a Grammy nomination in 2007 for her role as a vocalist on "Don't Feel Right" by The Roots.

She has appeared on groundbreaking Tiny Desk Concert performances by August Greene, as well as her own Mumu Fresh Tiny Desk and served as a musical ambassador for the United States on the American Music Abroad Tour in Central America.
