About

MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

    waited way too long

by arielinmd on 4/22/12Howard Theater - DC

Like most of the reviewers, was VERY disappointed in the show. I've seen Mos Def before and LOVE it when he raps. Singing, not so much. Wish he'll come back to DC area but perform his own songs next time - rap please!

    Seeing Yasiin

by mrbriscoe on 4/17/12Howard Theatre - Washington

Let me be honest yasiin bay aka mos def is amazing and watching him perform was a true treat. hearing an complete showcase of gil scoot heron in his own style was truely enjoyable. however there where a few problem with the concert. One it statred extermly late had to wait an entire hour and half just before the show started. the actual stand area was very small, as most of the room was taken up by chairs and tables. Still the concert was enjoyable

    Great Show

by LeighO on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

I really enjoyed this show. The newly rennovated Howard theatre was magnificent. Yasiin Bey put on a magnificent show, however if your looking for the black star Mos Def this isn't for you. He changed up his style a bit and is doing more scatting, soulful, hip-hop type music. I loved it, but again if your looking for a rap concert this isn't it.

    Disappointed

    by TammyT40 on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

The Howard Theatre was absolutely beautiful, BUT I was very disappointed that the concert started extremely late and rather short. I am a huge fan of Gil Scot Heron and if it was supposed to be a tribute to him...I would have expected to at least hear hits like "Living in a Bottle"

The show started 1 hour and 15 minutes late and unfortunately the vocals just weren't that great. He's a brilliant actor and rapper but he really should just continue to cultivate those talents.

I expected more from Yasiin Bey

by junglewarrior on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

The show was nice, but from scheduled to actual time he performed there was an hour and a half time delay. Not cool in my opinion. I almost asked for a refund, but I drove all the way out to DC. The music was dope, but I was hoping for more of an upbeat mix. After a couple of songs, I noticed several people sleeping. It was late, I was drinking, I understood and was sleepy too! I had hoped for more, but oh well.

seeing this man perform was great gotta luv Yasiin

by Anonymous on 4/16/12Howard Theatre - Washington

Great performance, tremendous talent. However, the event didnt start on time and he only performed for about an hour........so it wasnt really worth the money in that sense. But overall it was a good performance, I wished he did more of his older songs but the ones that he did do were good though. I wished he rapped more sang less......but other than that he was great! Now for the venue I attribute the slow and mediocure service to the fact that they just recently opened and have not developed their flow yet, but the food and drinks like at any other theater over priced and not strong enough. So dont go there to get drunk, dont go there to get full and not spend a bunch of money. But the venue is BEAUTIFUL great atmoaphere imagine a mix between a lounge, club and ampatheater but aimed for audiences of color will be going back if a good show is in town and reasonable.
