METAL CHURCH IN CONCERT:
Renowned for their face-melting shred sessions and skull-piercing vocals, thrash metal pioneers Metal Church are a small army of musical chaos. Like many of their British metal influences, the power of that chaos is housed in their lyrical focus on social commentary and profound philosophical concepts. The uniqueness of their words and the power of their sound has seen them through their breakups and fuels their current comeback, making for a promising outing on the road in 2014.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Before immediately relocating to Aberdeen, Washington, heavy metal band Metal Church formed in San Francisco in 1980. After building a following and honing their sound, they released their eponymous first album in 1984. In the ensuing years, the band released more critically and commercially successful albums but struggled to maintain a cohesive whole. Despite this, guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof remained the group's creative anchor and kept the band out of obscurity. Thankfully, after a few brief break-ups the group reunited in 2012 and came back stronger than ever. 2013 saw the release of their newest record, Generation Nothing, delighting fans with its powerhouse of aural electricity.
Do not miss this tour with Mike Howe. His voice was top notch! They played a nice selection of tunes. I grew to like him singing the David Wayne tracks. Three new songs were introduced that night. Pretty good. Chris Caffery from Savatage was filling in for the other guitarist. That was freakin' cool!!
The venue was really small -no place to sit, but Metal Church played well, gave the audience what they wanted, and actually looked like they wanted to be there. Metal Church gets the 5 stars, but the venue gets 1 star.
