    Disappointing!

by okitken on 12/20/13Spreckels Theatre - San Diego

Every year for the past 40 years my husband and I have attended a production of the Messiah at Christmas time. The quality of each production is different, but this one was by far the worst we have ever attended. We actually left at intermission time. The orchestra was of poor quality - starting right with the opening overture - and the soloists and chorus were both poor quality. The harpsichord played so loudly, apparently to cover up the inadequacies of the music and singing (bass and tenor choral parts were almost impossible to hear), that often we could not hear the rest of the orchestra. On top of this, when we arrived we were told that the seats in the center section that we had purchased were not available and we had to sit in seats on the side. Entire evening a great disappointment!

    Enjoyable Sing A Long

    by pjohn1125 on 12/12/11Southern Theatre - Columbus

The Southern Theater provided a great setting for the 2011 ProMusica Messiah Sing A Long. I was able to find a seat with fellow sopranos - but my companions were frustrated by the haphazard seating arrangement and found themselves in the second balcony - where they had a satisfactory singing/listening experience . . . however . . . they suggest that in future more of the main floor be reserved for actual SINGERS. We missed the soloists . . . please bring them back next year and cut out a few of the lesser-known choral sections.

    Making classical music accessible

by Underpar on 12/11/11Southern Theatre - Columbus

The "informal-ness" of the SingALong makes the event a delight. It's about singing with gusto rather than sounding like an opera star. I loved watching the concertmaster interact with other people before the singing began. I loved having the students with the players. The outreach of the event is great and to be applauded. Bravo and Brava!!!

    Sing-along Messiah

by Anonymous on 12/31/10Southern Theatre - Columbus

I really enjoyed my time at the sing-along. The staff was very helpful and knowledgable. The process to purchase music could have been better explained when I ordered my tickets, as well as perhaps offering used copies for those of us who are doing this as a "one-time" event & do not wish to spend $10 on something we may never use again. Of perhaps being able to turn in the music at the end for a refund, or even just a small fee to "rent" a copy for the evening. As it was my first time at this theatre, I found the parking confusing. All said though, I definitely would do this again (after I practiced a little!). It was a unique view of the Messiah that I found to be exciting.
