Chamber music - Mozart clarinet concerto

by clarinetomom on 11/22/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

We were disappointed by this concert - Richard Stoltzman's interpretation of Mozart was surprisingly choppy and sloppy. Menahem Pressler is a consummate pro, but at 87 obviously doesn't have quite the same energy as a younger performer. The chamber orchestra was proficient, but there was no chemistry between them and the soloists.

Stoltzman and Pressler + fabulous chamber orch.

by SteveNickname on 11/22/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

The second movement of the Mozart Clarinet concerto was a musical moment I'll never forget. Just perfect touch. The Brahms Sonata for both instruments was a wonderful interplay between two masters. And the orchestra was perfect, all soloists in their own rights

    Two Masters Play Beautifully

by Hedonist on 11/22/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Pressler's rendition of K. 453 was precise, controlled, and, by turns, delicate and forceful. Stoltzman's K. 622 showed verve, playfulness, and heart. And, in the Brahms, the two virtuosos fed and responded to each other like old friends who love jamming together, particularly in the adagio and vivace. The orchestra supported the concertos firmly and unostentatiously.

great program- appropriate for its venue

by Doug1AAA on 11/22/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Great selection of pieces for the program. The Brahms Sonata dragged a little and did not have the same connection with the audience as the two Mozart pieces. This is the first tijme I have seen a Chamber Orchestra without a conductor. I merely wish that Stoltzman did some of the conducting during the times that he was not playing, unlike Giles Yap who is featured playing the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3. Gap's conducting was spunky and definitely connected with the audience! Stoltzman's performance was otherwise great and really struck a chord with the audience who gave him a stnading ovation!
