About

MEMORY TAPES IN CONCERT:

Memory Tapes is one of the leading purveyors of the chillwave genre, combining ambient textures with disco rhythms to produce dreamy dance music. In concert producer/singer/guitarist Dayve Hawk conjures lush synthesizer melodies and laidback lullaby solos, blurring the line between club music and smooth jazz. With live drummer Matt Malardo playing along to computerized rhythm tracks, Memory Tapes’ live shows layer organic and robotic percussion simultaneously to make their already infectious beats sound truly explosive. The group’s futuristic yet laid-back grooves are sure to please dance floor denizens and wallflowers alike as they tour their nuanced and undeniably fun brand of indietronica across North America in 2015.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Introverted chillwaver Dayve Hawk was born in 1981 and raised in New Jersey’s rural suburbs. He first made a name for himself playing guitar and singing with Philadelphia-based rock band Hail Social. After touring in support of Interpol and The Secret Machines, the group released their self-titled debut in 2005. When the group disbanded in 2009, Hawk began experimenting with two separate solo recording projects: as Weird Tapes he created dance-oriented instrumentals, while simultaneously producing atmospheric ambient and vocal pieces under the moniker Memory Cassette. The names and styles of both projects coalesced to become Memory Tapes on Hawk’s 2009 full-length debut Seek Magic, which received rave write-ups from music news mainstays like Pitchfork and Drowned in Sound. Hawk began to add live musicians to his performances around the release of 2011’s Player Piano, giving his electronic dance songs a more organic and spontaneous feel. Hawk took a brief sabbatical to help raise his children from 2012-2014, but returned triumphantly in 2015 with the single “Fallout”, a danceable slice of ‘80s-inspired synthwave that has fans eager for more.

This show went far beyond my expectations. Didn't know how Memory Tapes' music would translate live, since his albums are so lush and produced. Turns out he plays with a full band, and I would describe it as more of a rock show than anything else. The rhythm section was incredibly tight, especially the bass which is very important with Memory Tapes. Overall the sound was spot on and the projections were great, too. The energy of the set list was very high. Probably the best 12 bucks I've spent in years. Highly recommended!

    Please erase my memory tapes

by cybe2001 on 2/9/13Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Booked for 8pm, Memory Tapes started playing only at 11pm, after two support acts, and stopped abruptly at midnight, not giving in to that loyal part of the audience which was calling for an encore. The guitars-drum version of Dayve's tracks did not work out. The sounds were ill-attuned. The artists, Dayve in particular, did not seem to feel like playing for us, did not seem to be having fun, nor trying very hard to give us a good time. Please erase my memory for this evening, so that I can go back to listening to his studio tracks.

    Memory Tapes Rails

This show was amazing! They are so different live than they are on their studio recordings. I thought this was going to be a boring show because their album is so mellow, but they RAILED live!
