About

MEAT PUPPETS IN CONCERT:

Meat Puppets have married chicken pickin’ country licks to fuzz-driven power chords for more than 30 rip-roaring years. Father and son Curt and Elmo Kirkwood command the six string duties in concert, delivering epics like “Oh, Me” with the instrumental interplay of The Allman Brothers, and thrashy throwdowns including “Lake of Fire” and “Backwater” with the furious punch of The Stooges. Curt's little brother Cris underpins the family guitar insanity with the thunderous, low-end rumble of his signature barreling basslines. And behind the kit, Shandon Sahm pounds out the shuffling rhythms and booming fills that help define the group’s brilliant blend of classic rock, punk, and country. Ticket buyers looking for a good time are advised not to miss these psychobilly superstars whenever they take their punk rock hootenanny on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Original drummer Derrick Bostrom and bassist Cris Kirkwood played in several Phoenix, AZ bands before recruiting Cris' older brother Curt to form Meat Puppets in 1980. After raiding Bostrom’s punk singles for inspiration, the group released their 1982 self-titled debut. The trio soon began to chafe at the confines of pure hardcore, however, preferring to experiment with country and psychedelic rock sounds on 1984’s Meat Puppets II. The album proved extremely influential on ‘90s alternative rock outfits as diverse as Nirvana, Pavement, and Dinosaur Jr., and helped the Meat Puppets land a major label deal near the dawn of the decade. The band scored their first radio hit in 1994 with “Backwater”, although by 1996 fatigue would force them to take an extended hiatus.  A decade later the brothers Kirkwood reunited with new drummer Shandon Sahm and haven’t looked back. The band remains as active as ever in recent years releasing albums like Lollipop (2011) and Rat Farm (2013), while they continue to thrill fans live in concert with their unbridled energy and genre-straddling sound.

    SST tour!

by shrabi on 5/15/17Brighton Music Hall - Boston

One of the best shows in years! Opener Grant Hart's voice was a bit off, and he had complaints about his own perfromance, but he did a short solo electric guitar set of his own songs (including Pink to Blue). Watt sounded better than ever--did mostly Minutemen songs, incl. strings of songs from What Makes a Man & Double Nickels. The drummer (looked like the one from the Tugboat tour) was amazing and the band was glad to be there. The Puppets were on fire too--tighter and more energetic than in past few years. They opened with Sam and after songs like Touchdown King and the faster Lost, did the Irish folk tune Whiskey in the Jar and 2 George Jones songs! The usual feedback jams followed on songs like Up on the Sun. I was standing near the drummer and he is a powerhouse. Great night!

    Meat Puppets keep delivering!

by MountainLine on 5/15/17Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Meat Puppets continue to bring their unique energy and humor to the 2017 stage. This show had more talking to the audience than Curt has done in recent years, which was a real treat. Just a special time for old and new Meat Pups fans alike!

sound improved to tolerable as set progressed

    by Rob140 on 11/7/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

Cass and his band were fine, if you're a fan you would have enjoyed it. Didn't stay for the next band 2nd set. You'll be standing in an unfurnished room for the N hours you endure; for this act at least, the audience was fairly calm and somewhat appreciative. I was expecting good sound based on other reviews I read before this my first visit to this venue, but it was very poor, albeit typical. All you could hear was the kick drum through the subs. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, ...., boom, etc., for songs on end. Was Cass singing? Playing guitar? Who knew? Also could hear some bass, certain lower notes resonated live enough to match the kick drum. I just don't understand this fascination with cranking up the kick drum like it's the only instrument we want to hear (oh yes, we want to *feel* it). They should just bill the act, Booming Kick Drum Plays 4/4 With Visual Accompaniment of an Actual Live Band Who Appear To Be Playing and Singing. The sound did adjust to tolerable later in the set. The sound person might want to consider this: when a roomful of adults who have set aside time and money to see a top artist they presumably really like as evidenced by the outlay of time and money, and that artist is dutifully, skillfully and energetically performing his/her hits, and the conclusion of each song is met with mild scattered applause and mostly relative silence, it's likely there has been a disconnection between a willing artist and willing audience, due to bad sound. Pay attention to what's going on and make adjustments.

    I had a great time.

by jimandthegreatspirit on 11/3/14Rough Trade NYC - Brooklyn

Obviously, I liked the show. The venue was also nice. Spent about $75 on music from the record store. Chances are, you will find something you like here. You can even have hands on experience with various instruments and effects they are selling. Cool store.

    Awesome show

by orangedonuts on 11/1/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

The Meat Puppets were amazing. Blazing through their entire set, then done - no encore. Vocals could have been a bit louder in the mix, maybe.

    Meat Puppets rule!!!!!!

by zbarnz on 11/1/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

The Meat Puppets were incredible as always! The sound was great and the musicianship was phenomenal. Cass McCombs was awful. They should be opening for a Soulless American idol contestant wannabe, not one of the best rock bands alive. They played as long as the Meat Puppets, which was criminal. They actual thought they were the show and didn't display the necessary respect for the Meat Puppets.

    Puppets at the Sinclair

by goNH on 11/1/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

Great sound from the Meat Puppets, played some old and new. High energy all the way around. I did not realize I would get Elmo Kirkwood as a bargain in the band. Drummer was as powerful as they get

    Kurt can shred!

by Rebell61611 on 10/24/14Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

The puppets were awesome as always. Kurt can play like no other. He blows me away every time i see them live, and the rest of the band is amazing too. Cris kicks ass like always, and Elmo has been a great add... Shandon holds them together extremely well, he adds just the right depth and complexity that their songs need, and he makes all the faces a drummer should! :) So glad they're touring again!

    Meat Puppets were incredible

by Meatpuppetscotty on 10/16/13Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Incredible show, great pacing, amazing song selection. Brought a friend who had never heard a single song by the band before and she was dancing and toe tapping to every song! Worth every penny of ticket price and the tickets are not expensive. If you have a chance to see them come to your town do not miss it!
