fun to see Maya in person

by hawkeyegrad on 11/19/12O'Shaughnessy at St. Kate's - St. Paul, MN

I told myself I should finish her book 'I know why the caged bird sings' before the event and I did, just barely, by finishing it the morning of the event. It was helpful as she did speak of it at this event. Liked hearing how she could tell jokes about being famous, like being mobbed at airports. It is why she now gets around on tour buses, liked hearing how she uses Prince's tour bus. I read her book as I found out it had been banned in some schools, but I saw nothing wrong with it. Any book worth banning is worth reading!

I saw her in vancouver and loved her. she moved me to tears. she sang and told stories from her life and read poetry. she is truly amazing. is on stage for 1 hour. you must see this living legend. this african american woman who is a civil rights activist that came from a very sad life of being raped and many other challenges to become fluent in so many languages and a doctor, author, poet , singer and teacher.

There is only one Maya Angelou

by hawaiigrown on 7/24/10Schnitzer concert hall - Portland

I had been mesmerized by her book, "I know why the caged bird sings," and by her talk at the University of Hawai`i in 1994. She had to cancel another engagement in Honolulu in 1996 because of health problems and I feared I would never get to experience her wisdom and wit again, but this summer in Portland, Oregon, we were blessed by her visit. And she traveled by bus all the way from North Carolina (her home) to bless us. Thank you so much; mahalo nui loa. PS: Singer Julianne Johnson provided a wonderful opening, too.

    Powerful speaker!

by heckle on 4/22/10local university - New Rochelle

It is difficult to categorize her. Is she a speaker, a poet, an author or an entertainer? She is all of the above and more. She is inspiring and truly amazing.
