    always amazing

by scheckymix on 8/3/16Birchmere - Alexandria

maura o'connell never disappoints. she has one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices in contemporary music. her stage presence is a tough one to follow and her humour and commentary on current events give us a peek into the kind of person she is off stage. she's real. no entourage, nothing flashy, just a lovely voice and...let's be honest here, she's breathtakingly stunning as well, always has been. it's a shame for us that she's semi-retired. i'll miss her year after year at the birchmere. it was always a performance i looked forward to consistently. karan casey held her own on stage as well. her solo performances were amazing. she's a true talent. on the numbers these two did together, their voices meshed seamlessly. i'm glad i had the opportunity to hear her sing again. they're a great pair. it was a true pleasure.

    Maura O'Connell owns the stage

by jxnfan on 2/26/13Birchmere - Alexandria

I love Maura O'Connell, so this will not be a completely objective review. Sunday night's show was billed as her last solo performance in the DC area, and she talked a bit about how she is giving herself a year to complete this tour. She is boring herself, she has said, and wants to do something else. So we went to see her in case it's a while until we see her again. We were not bored with her. Most of Sunday's show came off of my personal Maura dream setlist. Poetic Justice, Summerfly, Shades of Gloria, Blue Train, Western Highway, Down by the Salley Gardens, Love You in the Middle, and Trouble in the Fields were just a few among the songs she sang. She was in fine voice, and her great sense of humor was in evidence. John Mock and Don Johnson backed her up, and occasionally she expected audience assistance. If I have a criticism it's that there were 2 rather lengthy political rants. When Bono does this, Larry Mullen, Jr starts tapping his watch if it goes too long, and then plays him off with drums if he ignores the warning. All performers should have someone to do this. While it's a grand thing to live in a place where expression is a right, there's a time and a place. Maura spoke of how folk music was the way political ideas were shared long ago, and that's true - but it was through the music, not lectures. Let the music speak. It's true I didn't love the 2 songs that followed the rants - one Patty Griffin song about the poor (never been a PG fan) and one in Spanish about the disappeared. All in all, I loved this show, as I have the several shows of hers I'd seen before this. She owns the stage, and the Birchmere is such a great fit for her. I hope she gets over this bored thing soon, and we see her without too much time passing.

Pleasantly surprised with both the venue and show

by Cdez on 3/13/12Birchmere - Alexandria

The Birchmere is a very cosy music hall. Smaller than most, every seat is a good seat. Maura O'connell was very entertaining. She has a beautiful voice and a charming personality. It seems that she has played at the Birchmere enough that she has a relationship with the audience. I will definately go again next year.

Maura O Connell at the Ark - Great Show!

by MichiganCat on 8/2/11The Ark - Ann Arbor

The Ark is a great small venue to see performers like Maura O Connell! She's got a clear, beautiful voice and chooses great ballads to sing. She's a bold, thoughtful lady and a pleasure to watch and listen to.

    Thoroughly Enjoyable

    by Winston1118 on 3/1/11Birchmere - Alexandria

This is a show not ever to be missed. Not only does Maura have an outstanding voice but she is also an outstanding entertainer. She is very personable on stage, connects well with the audience, and makes you feel like it is her greatest pleasure to entertain just for this group of people on this night. Throughout the show she provides the names of the songwriters and some background or an anecdote on the artist. Her 3-piece band are fine musicians and the perfect accompaniment to her voice. The voice...a most pleasing alto with a delivery that ranges from powerful to subtle. She expresses and interprets the song like only the great singers such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald can do, and that is the highest of comparisons. Ms. O'Connell is a polished and professional performer of the highest caliber. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Maura O'Connell -- great voice, cool personna,

by mejpk on 2/28/11Birchmere - Alexandria

My wife was a bigger fan than me -- but I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Maura O'Connell is a very cool person -- funny, real, big heart, and big voice. Great guitar players to accompany her. Nice mix of her songs, nice conversation between songs. She lets you see more than a glimpse of who she is. Her voice reamins strong, sweet, beautiful and true. The sound and seats at Birchmere are very good. However the food was not good at all and was the sole disappointment of the evening. We went early to get a good seat, but found ourselves wishing that we ate elsewhere and arrived later -- there really isn't a bad seat there.

    beautiful folk singer

by splenderbender on 2/28/11Birchmere - Alexandria

Maura O'Connell is a wonderful folk singer with a superb band - but I have to admit the highlight of the evening was her encore, when she had her opening act of join her. The additional vocals of Ms. Mosser added some real punch and the guitar play by Mr. Britt was quiet simply the high point of the evening.
