    cool twist on sleeping beauty

by NikkiStone on 10/1/13Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

This is not your Disney version of Sleeping Beauty, but is definitely entertaining, thought provoking, and a modern overhaul of an old story. I took my 6 year old and even she loved it. Definitely recommend.

    Very Disappointing

by VDSM on 10/1/13Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

There was little of anything that could be called ballet and the story deviations destroyed the charm of the classic tale. The sets in the first half were sufficient, but the last half seemed thrown together and chaotic. The role example set in the last scene is not something i would encourage a daughter or grand daughter to pattern themselves after, which one would think Sleeping Beauty should be able to offer. Very disappointing.

    Original composer, very updated theme

by Kathy1962atthetheater on 10/1/13Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

This was my first large scale ballet and I loved it. The choreography, costumes, sets, were all over the top and wonderful. I was afraid this might be a little self important because the premise was so different, but I could not be more wrong. Add all the unique themes and choreography to the original score by Tchaikovsky and you just have a wonder ful experiance. I give it my highest rating.

    Sleeping Beauty was spectacular!

by yellow234 on 10/1/13Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty was a wonderfully fresh and funny interpretation of a classic ballet while still using Tchaikovsky's amazing music.

A creative and exciting show! I enjoyed the contrast of the classical music with contemporary dance.

    Story telling at its best

by Criticfor55years on 9/30/13Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

Bourne is justly recognized as The great dance master/story teller of our day. His ability to re conceptualize an ancient story, staying reasonable faithful to the various themes, and to tweak the music, is a rare talent. Funny, cute, dramatic and engaging. A wonderful company of dancers. It was good to see the North American premier here in Des Moines.
