About

It’s been a decade since we last heard from Marnie Stern, and in her absence, the indie music world has become overrun with an army of anti-Marnies i.e. corporate clones making banal playlist rock lacking in the whimsy, creativity, and virtuosity that made Stern’s take on rock music such a singular sound in the late 2000s. But when Stern’s guitar bursts in like a shower of stardust on The Comeback Kid, her long-awaited follow-up to 2013’s The Chronicles of Marnia, it’s like no time has passed. Marnie Stern is back—and not a moment too soon.

    Talented Eccentric Women

by Freerange on 4/13/13Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Marnie Stern has charisma, is adorably lewd and plays guitar like an angel. She seems to bend so far backwards to avoid all music cliches, including eliminating nearly all influences of the blues, that the resulting "tunes" can seem formless. Just as I think, ok she wants to always be unpredictable, she deliberately uses a demented repetition for effect, which is utterly predictable. The drummer is excellent, but this is not toe tapping music. Though without structure, the sound is never ugly. I found it fascinating, if confusing, and I am told her style is much calmer and less" spastic" than before. I admit I only get about half of it.

    Fun and interesting

by Toussaint1791 on 4/13/13Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Marnie Stern's music is both fun and interesting. I don't know why she doesn't have a wider following. I'd say about 250 people were at the show. She deserved at least 2500! The performance was great.
