MARK KNOPFLER IN CONCERT:

From his days fronting iconic British rock group Dire Straits to his multi-platinum solo career, Mark Knopfler has remained a celebrated songwriter and guitar god beloved for his melodic sense and unique fingerpicking style. Knopfler has been touring regularly since the late ’70, and the decades of experience show – his concerts are dynamic, career-spanning affairs that take audiences on a hit-filled musical journey anchored by his world-wise voice and subtly executed riffs. Whether he’s performing Dire Straits favorites like “Money for Nothing” or singing solo cuts from 2015’s Tracker – several of which were inspired by a trip with Bob Dylan – Knopfler always brings the house down with his electric energy, virtuosic guitar playing, and time-honored showmanship.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was inspired by his musician uncle to take up the guitar as a child. He formed several bands in his teens, and at age 16 he made his first TV appearance performing as a duo with a schoolmate. After receiving a degree in English from the University of Leeds he relocated to London, where he worked as a lecturer at a local college while moonlighting as a guitar player in various bands. In 1977 he formed Dire Straits with his brother David, and the following year the band released their self-titled debut album to a Top 5 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Their next two albums were equally popular, but it was their fifth album -- 1985's Brothers in Arms – that really established them as international superstars. The album topped charts around the world, selling more than 30 million copies and earning the band their first US No. 1 with “Money for Nothing”. After touring in support of the release the band went on hiatus while Knopfler pursued other projects. The band reunited in 1991 to release one final album On Every Street before breaking up again for good in 1995. Knopfler made his solo debut the following year with Golden Heart, a critically acclaimed collection that was followed by a string of well-received albums in the ‘90s and ‘00s. In addition to his rock output, Knoplfer is a respected film composer who has scored more than a half dozen films including The Princess Bride (1987) and Wag the Dog (1997). In 2015 he released his ninth solo album Tracker, drumming up excitement among fans for his next round on the road.

    Always amazing and memorable!

My wife and I once traveled from California to Amsterdam just to see Mark perform. He won our hearts many years back and we have had the pleasure of watching him perform at least five other times.

    Nice

by Daniel on 11/25/19Madison Square Garden - New York

It was a nice experience, but I think Knopfler was not totally immersed in the performance. He didn't seem fresh for it

    One of the best

    by C. C. on 10/9/19Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

What can you say that hasn't already been said about a Knopfler show? Everything is perfect from the song list, the musicianship of not only Mark, but the entire band and of course the sound system is so good, you can hear everything so clearly.

Mark was great, as was his band. Always a special, rare event when Knopfler comes to town.

    Great concert except...

by j. on 10/8/19Madison Square Garden - New York

We were moved to better seats due to a light that was very bright it sort of "blinded" our eyesight and making it difficult to watch the show but my biggest disappointment was the fact that Mr. Knofpler did not sing "Sultans of Swing" despite the crowd shouting for him to sing it. If this song is not ever included in his repertoire then I will not bother going to his concerts in the future. To me and millions of other fans, HE IS THE SULTAN OF SWING so we want to hear him sing it LIVE!!!

    Great Performer

by Steve on 10/3/19Madison Square Garden - New York

I was up high, and the show was still wonderful. Madison Square Garden and the crowd were electric for both Raitt and Knopfler. Both artists brought total professionalism to the show.

    fantastic concert

by aussiefan on 10/3/19Madison Square Garden - New York

As MK was not planning any concerts in Australia we travelled to New York for the Madison Square Gardens concert, a long way to go with considerable expense, but what an experience. Madison Square Gardens is an amazing facility which we toured on the Wednesday morning as the roadies were setting up for the concert. We sat close to the front and the concert was crystal clear. MK and the band were in excellent form, great song selection and their enjoyment in performing was evident and was reflected in the end result. It was interesting that around us there were people that had travelled from various countries, which speaks volumes for the high regard that MK enjoys Overall a fantastic experience and hopefully MK will continue to perform live

    disappointing.

by kdavis on 9/30/19Madison Square Garden - New York

Bonnie Raitt, who opened for Mark, turned MSG into an intimate club. Knopfler failed to do so. His set list was light on Dire Straits songs. He chose not to use the screens, so it was impossible to enjoy his guitar technique from the upper level. He also spent over ten minutes introducing the band, which he could have spent playing another song. I've seen him several times before and he was much better.
