    BRAVO

by docEF on 10/17/13New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

The purely orchestral works were wonderful, played everything on high note, giving the additional encore piece - "Richard Wagner - "Lohengrin"- Prelude to Act III

Nice concert hall, good orchestra, great pianist

by WWLL on 10/20/11Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

I went to the Valley Performing Arts Center for the first time. The San Fernando Valley is a huge part of Los Angeles but there are very few high quality cultural institutions. Downtown is quite a long haul from the Valley. This concert hall at Cal State U Northridge opened earlier this year. For me it is quite a drive but I thought I would try it once. It is about one-hour drive at rush hour. I went early and spent some time with my laptop at a nearby public library. The Mariinsky Orchestra was conducted by Valery Gergiev. The first piece was a Suite from the Firebird. Alexander Toradze played Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 completed the program. The hall is a glass box on the outside. Inside it is a wide shoebox. There is a lot of blonde wood. The ceiling is several sets of curved reflectors. I got a ticket in the balcony which is the fourth floor. I could see very clearly. The sound is terrific. Every instrument came through. I was a little surprised that the Mariinsky Orchestra is mostly men. There was about five good looking women. Other than the strings, there was only one woman, a flutist. All the women except for one cellist wore dresses. The playing was very good. In the biography of Alexander Toradze there is '...International Piano named his recording of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 "historically the best on record" (from more than 70 recordings).' From my seat I saw every movement of the hands and fingers. It was a very remarkable performance. Toradze defected to the US in 1983. The hall was not filled for this concert. There was no eye candy, which surprised me. At Disney there are usually some trophy wives and young daughters. At the balcony level there were no snacks available. I wasn't going down four floors to get a cup of coffee. My conclusion is that this is a decent concert hall but it would take a very attractive event to lure me there again.

One of the best performances I've ever experienced. The venue sounded bright and soft. The music full of vitality and life.

Was great prefomace but the selection of music to play was not a nice blend. There was not one nice melodic piece it was all very aggressive then soft and choppy in nature. Not one memeorable melody or just emotial song. I think one song like what we heard and 2 that are diffent. I am sure many people liked it but if u want to fill every seat play me melody springs
