    Mandy Patinkin, a National Treasure

by Patrushka on 2/19/20Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Mandy Patinkin dazzled us from start to finish. His songs, his jokes and his political comments were so relevant and touching. We had only known him from The Princess Bride and Homeland; thus, his fine singing was a total, but rewarding surprise. His fabulous energy level was unbelievable. The Broward Theater was a pleasure. We couldn't have asked for a more entertaining evening.

    Little-known gems

by MarytheK on 2/17/20Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Loved the show for many reasons, including Mandy's stylizing of the music and lyrics. My only wish is that I knew more about the songs. He gave a "back story" on a couple of numbers, but there were some songs I was unfamiliar with. I recognized Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, etc. but there were some that eluded me and I was curious about the "why" for their inclusion. That adds a great dimension to a live performance, especially one where the performer sits comfortably at times, trying to be a tad closer to the audience.

    Disappointed in Song Selection

by M. S. on 2/17/20Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I've liked Mandy Patinkin since he played Che in Evita and subsequently sang with Patti LuPone in concert. Also, liked him as an actor in the TV series Chicago Hope and Criminal Minds. His voice is still wonderful and his presentation powerful. However, in over an hour and a half performance he only sang 4 songs that I knew! The crowd loved him, but many felt the same way I did. Sing songs we know , please.

    I adore Mandy

by Ktag on 2/16/20McCoy Center - New Albany

His voice is amazing! He could sing the alphabet or the dictionary and it would sound wonderful. The venue was fantastically intimate to see him and the acoustics were great. I didn't know many of the songs that he did so I wish that he had introduced them and told stories about why they were chosen for this tour or why they were important to him. The tour is named Diaries after all- some insight into his thinking would have fit right in and made it all the more special. I particularly loved the tidbits he did share. And especially his commentary on the current political administration. I imagine some of the rich folks in the audience (it was a Gala evening) were squirming in their seats but that made it that much more entertaining. He has a wonderful sense of humor to go along with his amazing voice. It was a fabulous evening! Thank you Mandy!!

    Good Man, Bad Show

by BrowardCntrRowC on 2/16/20Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Mandy Patinkin, with an accompanying pianist, presented a marathon ninety-minute one-man show. Mr. Patinkin is an actor/singer of great ability and range and many acclaimed accomplishments; unfortunately, this show wasn’t one of them. His voice for more than half the show was both muffled and gravely; I was siting in row C and had great difficulty hearing and understanding the words of what he was singing for the entire first third of the show. The opening “River City” song was a talent wrenching, inarticulate, bravura performance of breathing and mouth gymnastics; Mr. Patinkin’s stamina, not his articulation , is what deserved the applause. The rest of the song selections that followed, along with the personal reflections and stories shared with the audience, were dark, morose, and lonely, like the musings of an old man sitting on a sofa during a holiday – whom no one calls or visits. The color of his repertoire matched his all black clothing and the all black-painted stage set-up. His presentation of “Over the Rainbow” was so dark that all inherent hope in the song was strangled at birth. You knew the song was one of hope and tomorrow but all it provided, as presented, was a depressive undertow to take the listener to the “Upside Down” world of Stranger Things: darkness, blackness, death. For me, it is difficult to say that this show was entertaining in any classical sense.

    A Self-Indulgent Experience

by Bruce on 2/15/20Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

We had terrific seats, so the sights and sounds were unobstructed. Mandy entered a minimalist stage containing a grand piano, a chair that he occasionally used as a prop, and a street lantern. He was dressed in all black. He began by singing (or rather speaking) the monologue from Music Man, Trouble. He then indulged himself in a series of sad songs lamenting his mother's dementia, sad childhood memories, death, suicide, lost loves, fading memories, and treatment of refugees. The sadness was palpable and haunting. His songs were mostly spoken in a dramatic singsong, his body used as a prop and a piano tinkling background support. He had a unique interpretation of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody s well as a medley of extremely sad songs concluding with Harry Chapin's Taxi Driver. Concert goers were leaving the theater throughout the concert. One near me was heard saying, "enough of this, let's go." Large numbers of theater-goers left before the encore, despite Mandy imploring the audience to stay. "We only have two more songs for you," he said. One of the two songs was sung in Yiddish, The second was accompanied by pictures of refugees braving horrible conditions and death In their quest for freedom. Mandy's voice and vocal interpretations are incredible, but his self-indulgent repertoire was a turn-off. I have seen Mandy perform three or four times previously, but this performance left such a bad taste in my mouth, that I doubt I would see him again. To be fair, large portions of the audience cheered "Bravo" during a long standing ovation.

    Boring

by Bubs on 2/15/20Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Although his voice is beautiful, this was a boring and depressing evening. You don’t leave humming a tune. Aside from one Harry Chapin song, not much was familiar. The stage was dismal as was the whole event. I think he should stick to acting on Homeland. Very disappointed!

    Mandy Patinkin concert

by PA snowbirds on 2/15/20Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Very disappointed in the concert. He is so talented , we were really looking forward to the performance. We thought there was a very poor selection of songs. He needed to lighten it up a bit. We were not familiar with most of the songs and they were mostly rather depressing.
