About

M.I.A. IN CONCERT:

M.I.A. has led the way for women in hip-hop ever since her fearless lyrics and gutsy stagewear propelled her to fame in the early '00s. The Academy Award and Grammy Award-nominated rapper is known for pushing the boundaries with her live performances as she mixes jungle and world music with modern rap and electronica amid artistic stage designs. Whether she's performing game-changers like "Paper Planes" or spitting fan favorites like "Galang," the dynamic British artist will treat fans to her hit-filled sets on tour with A$AP Ferg and Elliphant in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, M.I.A. got her start as a designer and filmmaker before deciding to pursue her music career full-time in 2002. Experimenting with beats in her bedroom, she released her 2005 debut Arular, which was inspired by her father and their experiences in her childhood home of Sri Lanka. The album was met with universal acclaim, landing her on tour with LCD Soundsystem and Gwen Stefani and launching her to a new level of stardom. Since then, M.I.A. has released three studio albums, including 2013's Matangi, been nominated for numerous awards, and collaborated with some of music's biggest stars including Jay-Z and Madonna. With a laundry list of hits in her repertoire, it's no surprise she made Rolling Stone's "Best of the Decade" list in the 00's and was named one of the World's 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine. Back on the road, M.I.A. continues to push the limits as she rocks the mic on her upcoming tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

I Love M.I.A. and the Fox Theater but it was bad

by URBoss on 11/7/17Fox Theater Oakland - Oakland

This was my 3rd time seeing M.I.A. and it was horrible this time around. I saw her in 2005 and then again in 2014 (amazing concert). We drove 3 1/2 hours each way to see a horrible concert that wasn't even an hour long. We were there around 715 pm expecting an 8pm show. We had an amazing spot right in front of the stage with 3 people in front of us. The opener came on right after 8pm so we thought everything was on schedule. The openers DJ was cut off around 830 and everyone just stood around for an hour. We went to the restroom and talked to one of the security personnel. I was told M.I.A. didn't even show up until after 9pm. M.I.A. DJ ran out around 930 connected his laptop and began mixing for 20 minutes or so. Her hype man wasn't that great and people were booing and walking out. The place got really hot and people were clearing out for fresh air, cold drinks and because they were tired of waiting. We left our spot after I started not feeling good, and went back by the steps. M.I.A. came on a little before 10 pm and her mic was extremely low and she was over powered by her DJ, back up dancer/singer and the music. In certain areas of the stage there was really bad interference and there was just high pitched screech. We saw handfuls of people leaving complaining about the wait, the sound, and lack of performance. M.I.A. ran off stage for 5 minutes or so, changed and came back out for a few more songs. She started paper planes at 1050, and was off stage before 11 pm. M.I.A. said they didn't rehearse the show and it clearly showed. I wish we didn't waste 7 hours of driving, money, and almost 4 hours at the concert venue for an unprofessional performance that wasn't even an hour. I love you M.I.A. but I won't be returning to a performance of yours.

Horrible sound quality. Posted time was 8pm. She came on at 10pm, and her starter ended at 8:30p. Sorry, you can’t leave a fan hanging for 1.5 hours. She lost me.

    M.I.A Very disappointing

by BabyGC on 11/5/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I was excited to see tickets for M.I.A. My boyfriend had seen her in San Diego a few years back and had always said how great a show she put on. I got tickets before he even knew the show was happening. We got to the venue while the opener was performing. She was good. The intermission was extremely long, over 45 minuets. Then D.J Tiga comes on... We were not impressed at all. It was clear there had not been a sound check before the show. He sounded like an amateur playing around with turn tables for the first time. He was trying to get the crowd hyped, but he was annoying. Then M.I.A come on stage. I.t was hard to hear her with D.J Tiga shouting over her. Then she says her background singer had gotten sick right before the show. We were very disappointed with what we were hearing. I think the background singer could hear the show was a bomb so she came out to sing. The sounds sound a little better. D.J Tiga wasn’t as vocal (maybe his mic got turned down) thank goodness!! But the show to this point was a disappointment. We ended up walking out because it had been so bad. Not sure what went wrong, but I don’t think I’d pay to see M.I.A again.

M.I.A. ...I wanted to love it

by LoochA on 11/5/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Two stars are for the Fox Theatre which I love, but did not want to give it 5 which may lead you to believe that the M.I.A. show was worth the time or the $. The sound was terrible and she had two other people screaming into microphones on top of her. It was impossible to hear anything but noise. I don’t know if that was intentional but I’ve been a fan of hers for years and had never seen her live and was very disappointed. Maybe this is how her live shows are. (?) Production quality was bad and the sound was even worse. Would’ve loved to be able hear her sing. She did say something about it being her first time on stage without back up, so maybe she was trying to have these other people cover her up. Too bad. Left after three songs. Bummed.

    Terrible

by JaeBoss on 11/5/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

MIA came on very very late, played a short set, sound was terrible, and I’m pretty sure she was drunk. Was extremely disappointed in her performance. Been a fan of hers for years but will not see her again, she was terrible the last time she played at the Fox 6 years ago, but I thought maybe it was a one time thing. Guess not.

    Hot Mess

by sfkooks on 11/5/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The DJ playing with M.I.A. was incredibly annoying and ruined the songs. There was some other girl on stage singing off key that had zero chemistry with M.I.A. The sound was terrible and the show was only an hour. What a total disaster. M.I.A. said that they don't rehearse and it is obvious.

    Short Changed

    by TexasChick713 on 11/5/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I love M.I.A. music. I came all the way from Houston to see the show in Oskland. It was my first time seeing her in concert. The show started at 8 and ended at 11. The entire time was spent on a local rapper named Mikatron who was decent and a DJ. The other time was waiting. MIA only performed for an hour and most songs were cut off. I felt short changed as there were a lot of songs that she didn’t do. She shared the stage with (2) dancers and some hype girl. The graphics and lighting were disjointed. I was kind of disappointed in the show.

    What was that?

    by Jjay4 on 11/5/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The sound quality was so bad. Her production was cool but the sound quality was so bad. I can’t figure out it if it was the venue or her production in general.
